Default Savage B 17 bolt failure

Shooting my Savage B17 and Hornady 20 gr bullets at the range (at Victoria BC, where I live now) and got a surprise: cartridge base tore off, case stuck in barrel, magazine retainer broke, magazine blew out, bolt difficult to move. End of shoot with that one!

Along with the broken magazine retainer, a local gunsmith pointed out that the bolt face is bent. That's why the bolt was so difficult to remove.

Off to Savage Arms in Ontario she goes. Rifle was bought in March 2019, so still under warranty.

Hate to say it, but sometimes "made in USA" might not be all it's cracked up to be. Although strictly speaking, this gun was made in Canada, so maybe that still maybe leaves "made in USA" OK. Still, the B17 was designed in the USA and American inspectors should have checked it's build progress.

Oh well, we'll see how it all turns out. That 17 HMR sure is a nice round!

Default

That is why the original semi auto 17mach2 and 17hmr rifles were discontinued. If the chamber isn't kept very clean, it happens often enough to be a concern.
