Default Broke Down and Bought a 30-06

Despite the very large number of guns I have bought and sold over the years, there are two cartridges that I have never owned; a 270 and a 30-06. I was just never over fond of either one but I finally located a Sako Mannlicher stocked rifle in Left Hand that I have been looking for for quite some time and it was in 30-06. I think I am going to mount a Swaro Z5 3.5x18x44 BRH reticle scope in it to retain that European feel overall. Need to find a set of one piece rings as it doesn't come with it. Anyone who knows where there is a set of low rings, let me know please.

Also going to have to find some factory ammo for the initial test run. If I can find something factory, with a good bullet, that will shoot .75 or better I will just use that. This isn't going to be a high volume shooter. I still much prefer Sakos made before they got bought out by Berretta in 2000.

Beautiful rifle, shame about the bolt being put on the wrong side

The old 06 maybe a bit boring but it just gets the job done!

Congrats

Awesome! Love seeing lefties in anything... I had to google to see what the mannlicher type stock is all about. Apparently doubles as a walking stick? Craziness..

I had the right handed version in 6.5x55, and it was even more accurate than I expected. That being said, I have owned rifles in both 270win, and in 30-06, I never bought them for myself, but the deals were so good, I bought them to flip.

Beautiful rifle.. I have always been a 308 guy myself.. short action short barrel...but a couple years ago i decided to buy a 30-06 ( price was so good i couldnt refuse) man its a slick chambering. The long tapered case just slides so smoothly compared to the 308....ill never jump off the 308 boat but i do now have a like for the '06 im sure it will grow on you as well.

I think that I have a set of one piece rings that you are looking for and that you can have for all of your contributions to this forum. Each side of the ring bottoms has a tapered slot so that when compressed, it fits into the dovetailed base. The dovetailed base has an allen screw on each side that compresses the ring to hold your scope in place. I will be travelling to Edmonton tomorrow and can meet up with you or can drop them off at the P&D optics counter.

Congratulations on a beauty rifle. I have always been a fan of the manlicher stocks. So classy. I have a 10/22 full stock and I just love it. Enjoy!

Appreciate the offer but it is way past no fun digging through boxes looking for stuff. I don't think I will have any real problems. I used a lot of Privi and Sellier and Bellot ammo in 30-06 and 7x57 in Europe hunting Boar, Red Deer etc. I think I am going to start with that. Was very accurate, killed great and being European made doesn't suffer the same lack of availability as stuff out of the states. The 7x57 and 7x57R Sellier is so accurate I had trouble making hand loads that would out shoot it. However, if I run across anything loaded with 180 Partition like Federal, Nosler and Norma make or 150 TSX/TTSX Bullets, only comes in Barnes Vortex as far as I know, I will definitely give them a test run.

Nice rig Dean!
I have never owned a 30-06 either but I took my first deer with a borrowed Rem 760 when I was a kid, someday I might own one as well if I find the right one/deal.....

Thumbs up Nice find!

That is a mighty fancy boom stick; practically a work of art.
Good to see that you've finally gotten a decent hunting calibre to work with.

Nice rifle, always liked the style of stock, just curious if they are bedded or does the barrel free float in the stock.

FPS

The stocks are two piece and I think I found a set of one inch rings thanks to schleprock.

As to the question about bedding, none of the full stock rifles I have owned have been floated. I did full length Devcon bed a couple of them to get them to shoot better. Between load development, and/or bedding, every one I have owned I got so they would eventually shoot under an inch. The Barrel band pressure and snobble tip need to be even as well as the stock properly bedded and then most will shoot great. Most shot great with no fiddling at all and were easy to develop loads for.

Very nice rifle
I have had tremendous luck with Barnes factory Vor-tx 180s which shoot little tiny groups from mine but at whatever they cost a box now it's a bit daunting to buy a box just to find out your rifle doesn't like them.
The problem with 06s is that once you have one and something else catches your eye, you say, ah well I could just load down to 130, or up to 220 or anything in between and then you don't get to buy yourself a new rifle.

Always preferred the 06 to the 308 just because I could get a few more FPS and shoot heavier bullets. First hunting rifle was a Weatherby in 3006 that's long since gone. Now I shoot a 308 for the simple reason of having a Sig716 for work. I can take all the brass from range days I want and know it's once fired, factory brass. None of that reman stuff.

OP that stock sure is pretty! How soft is the recoil pad? It looks like one I had on a 375H&H that was slightly softer than a hockey puck?
