BC Fly Fishers
Just got back from 13 days at Whiteswan Lake BC.
Fishing was slow on Dry Fly's.
Watched most BC Fishers trolling for fish.
Then watched 4 boats of locals trying to cast to cruising fish.
They couldn't cast more than 30'..40'
I guess Bobber watching and trolling qualifies as being a Fly Fisher..
Not to me..
Got stopped in a boat search on the way home, My Crestliner had a few areas that should have been cleaned better.
The Officers were outstanding and helpful.

So you're implying that holier than whatever Alberta fly fishers don't troll flies or use indicators...hah, look again!

Some people think using a boat qualifies as being a Fly Fisher.
Not to me...
What do I know though, I'm new and can only cast 30' or 40'.

No wonder fishing was slow if all you did was try dry flys. I guess you would rather stick to what you know than expand your techniques. That is fine. It leaves so many great fish in the lake for the rest of us.
If you want to be humbled, try a trip to Terrace and you can be outcasted in distance and number of casts by the spey rod experts. Of course, if they use a sinking line I guess they wouldn't be pure fly fishers anyway...right?

Wow. And you wonder why BC anglers think ABs are a bunch of suv snobby fly fishermen. You're actually criticizing other anglers methods as you stand on your elitist dry fly only stool, but the fishing was slow. I've bobber fish that lake and cast to it's cruisers many a day. I have no shame. PS fishing was good

Maybe that’s where I go wrong, I should be casting 100’ with dry flies only,

Fishing was slow on Dry Fly's..
Didn't say that was all I used..
Intermediate Sink Line..
Damsel and especially Darner Dragons were kicking.
Hylea Shrimp in the Marl too..
On the edges of weed beds.
I landed an honest 40-50 fish. Biggest was almost 20".
I did engage some of these folk's over the campfire..
They honestly and mostly Troll with 52 Buicks..
Whatever..
The Canal Flats Marine Corp were in attendance.
Next time out I want to try some of the other Lakes of which I know not much..

I live on Vancouver island now I moved here 4 years ago from alberts and the first thing I noticed out here is a lot of people out here on lakes troll only and with floating lines, it doesn’t bother me at all I just think that most of them r just having a good time getting out, I do run into a few guys that anchor and chrino fish but I haven’t seen any cast to the shoreline and retrieve but who cares I’m having fun catching my fish. I’m no snob I fish anyway I can catch a fish I take 5 rods with me so I’m set up for whatever presents itself

So let me get this right, you were at white swan for 13 days and caught 50 fish that's 3.85 fish a day, if you were fishing say eight hours a day that would mean you were catching less than 1 trout every two hours, and biggest being under 20" and take account of the BS factor, I don't think I'd be pointin the finger at anyone, then to top it off you tell how you didn't clean your boat thoroughly?
Sometimes it's better to sit back and listen.

My apologies jetboatjimi. I presumed that you were one of those guys that have told me in the past that to be a true fly fisherman one should only use drys but after reading your second post I see I was wrong. Whiteswan can be fickle until you figure out what the fish want. I've always wondered what the folks were doing trolling the deep stuff myself when I was doing alright in the shallows. Maybe they catch a couple a day but they may be catching those monsters that I hear live there. One word of advice I got from a local was if you are camping at the Packrat campsite was to leave your hood on your vehicle up because the packrats tend to make nests in your engine compartment if your hood is closed and chew wires up pretty good. Beautiful place to spend 13 days

I really enjoy the camping and Mountain Biking around Whiteswan..
I fish 2 or 3 hours a day, read, paint and listen to music (Headphones).
I must be an amateur, which would explain the locals wanting my Darner & Damsel Patterns..They also enjoyed watching them being tied.
If it was only about numbers I would have taken up Golf..

I fish in Alberta quite often and I fish with Albertans more than that. Some can cast further than me, some can't cast as far as I can pee. Some catch more fish and others catch fewer than I do. Some tie flies better and faster than I (not many though). Most are great people and a lot of fun to fish with. A few, a very few, think they are the end all and be all of fishing. Them I leave to their delusions; karma will get them in the end.

You call yourself a fly fisherman, yet you fish from boat on a lake. Real fly fishermen only fish creeks, streams and rivers with 3 weights, #20 or smaller dry flies, split cane rods, silk lines, catgut leaders while wearing tweed jackets, ties and cufflinks. Your just another poser......

Hmmm....about as understanding and intellectual as the condescending comments you made about BC fly fishermen when you started this thread.

Yet you are the one putting down people for trolling with flies?
I see lots of people in Alberta and elsewhere trolling glues fir trout I fail to see the difference
We troll streamers for pike and walleye, and sometimes use indicators as well .
When I fished for bass I rarely cast to a rising fish .
Salt water fly fishermen often troll large steamers over the top of the waves as well.
I have been fly fishing fir a very long time and have never fished very many of the southern river and creeks for trout but have seen about every style there is to see - as long as a person is legally having gun who cares?

I was trolling a bugger around the other day, looking at my calloused knuckles, scratching my sloped forehead and wiping my protruding brow, and the source of all my problems suddenly dawned on me; I'm not a real flyfisherman, - I'm a Neanderthal !!!
Oh well, perhaps I can't cast very far, and don't have the finesse to gently place a dry fly towards shore, but at least I excel in the use of my fish-bonker club!
It's just so embarrassing being around the further evolved.

Wow, the amount of class shown in this thread is outstanding. Glad to know that we as outdoorsmen stand together regardless of what side of the border we are located on. To the OP please stay home if you were so disgusted by what other anglers are doing.

Numbers?
You mean like casting 30' or 40'?
You said that, no one else.
You appear to have a real Dr Jekyll and mr Hyde thing going for you, who will we get on your next post?

Back down home in L.A.
Oldman is high & dirty.
Numbers was meant to be numbers of fish per day.
Too busy to argue..

Please stay in AB. It's way too expensive out here anyway. Don't you have a reason to boycott BC.
