Been shooting a 444 (Marlin 444S) since 1978, great gun/great caliber especially in thick brush, it takes a lot to make it deflect, and it sure is a one-shot load on deer/bear/moose.
Re: the ammo - I reload, so rarely buy factory 240 grain ammo. I reload with 265 grain FP Hornady projectiles. Garden variety factory load is Remington 240 grain, OK for deer but too thin jacket for heavy bear (black bear only where I live).
Be careful if considering the LeverEvolution Hornady stuff. Have a look at the barrel near where the caliber is stamped. If it says "Micro Groove" the chances are that it won't shoot the LeverEvo stuff worth a darn. If it's got the MG, stick with the Jacketed Flat Point stuff, or at least the flat point bullets. I speak from experience on this. Both Cabelas and Bass Pro have the Remmie stuff where I am (although overpriced compared to most of the LGS's), and the LeverEvo as well.
