I'm not sure what it costs.
Not sure if you know this but you do not need it on your trapline.

Default Insurance

I believe it is $250 a year for PLPD on my sled. About the same as a quad.

I just got quoted for my new sled and it is $350 with a $500 deductable. I figure since it is new I may as well get insurance on it. Just wondered if there are better rates out there or not was all?

Shane, The only time that you don't need insurance is if you use your sled on Private land only, anywhere else including public land which include trapline insurance is required.
Same as the registration of your sled.

OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE REGULATION AR 319/2002

Under exemptions:
(a) an off-highway vehicle owned by a trapper and operated solely on that trapper’s registered trap line;

This is what I have been operating under:
However I may be wrong I just noticed it's from 2002 not sure if it's been updated

That's what I always thought also. I don't run insurance on my trapline sled.

I wouldn't either if it was an old piece of junk and was not worth much but if you have a newer model of any kind and it gets stolen then that would suck to not have insurance.

I take it you have to have it registered to be on crown land?

Don't you need insurance before you can register it? Anyhow, you're right, if you run a expensive sled or quad, you're probably smart to insure them, especially the way the thieves are performing nowadays.

I pay $199.00 for a 2014 Ski doo summit 800 and $176.00 for a 2012 Ski doo Renegade 550. This is for full coverage, all perils. This is through Johnson Insurance. My new Ranger is $311.00 all perils as well upto a value of $25,500.00, she is loaded up.

It appears as though you have collision as you've mentioned a $500 deductible. That's what this sounds like. Not saying it's wrong, if you smack up your sled and its $10 000 damage you pay $9500. I believe most go with pl(personal liability) and pd (personal damage) only. for example if you inadvertently hit someone and they are paralyzed, thus, sue you for $1M(pl), or you are at fault for replacing their machine (pd).
If the machine is financed I believe you need both. If not, just pl/pd. That appears the cost difference. In the insurance business one thing I will say is that you get what you pay for. There is generally a reason one cost more then the other. Within reason.

All perils, specified perils, collision, liability, etc. It's confusing for the average consumer. Thus, make sure you ask what you are and AREN'T covered for and get it in writing. The old "Well my broker said...." doesn't hold up in court if/when a crisis happens.

Yup you are right. It is all confusing to the average guy. I will look into things a bit more.

I think that I pay about $400/year but that is for all perils. Although i paid cash for my sled, it's worth a bit of money and I decided to go with collision as well as everything else. I crashed and burned a sled a few years ago and all that was left was an engine block, steering components and bogie wheels. It cost me the deductible but I got the replacement value for the sled.

I think that PL/PD only covers you for property damage that the sled causes but not to the sled itself, I'm not 100% sure, so if you are prepared to take the loss on the sled if it sinks to the bottom of a lake, it'd be fine. Otherwise, I'd pay the extra premium. Everyone has their own risk tolerance so it's a personal thing I guess.

You don't need Insurance to register your trapline vehicles. I usually only insure my newest machine. There's no such thing as cheap insurance
