Default Thoughts on Stock filler

Just wondering how many of you have filled the Buttstock cavity of a Synthetic stock to stiffen it and make it not so hollow sounding?. If so, what have you used?.

I use fiberglass resin and fiberglass matting works well and is reasonably cheap. Just make sure you mix the resin to the proper proportions.

Good idea!, I was thinking maybe a sliver of rigid blue foam surrounded by a silicon (like sikaflex), or possibly spray foam.

I bet some expandable foam would work pretty good

I have used it on a T3 stock and it seems to have improved the "feel" of it.

I used low expanding window foam to fill a Stevens but was a little disappointed as it did not make much of an improvement over the slab of white Styrofoam the factory used.

Has anybody used standard or lightweight bondo body filler? I know that it shrinks slightly after drying so suspect that it would need to be installed in several stages.

monofoam also works good to fill large cavities on synthetic/plastic stocks when bedding the barrel channel, saves a lot of epoxy.

Default stock filler

Greetings gang. Low expansion foam - not the brand dubbed big gap filler - is quick and easy. Use some masking tape to keep things neat and make sure you make an allowance for mounting bolts ala shotgun / two piece stocks. Those big fat straws from 7-11 work nicely. They also make for wicked speed loaders for a henry big boy.

Colin.

Default Ideas

I can send you some pictures of the stock I just completed. I actually used jb weld to fill in the ribs on the forend. I then used the plastic weld that comes in the small plastic tubs to fill the stock end(even out the weight) The balance is not perfect yet and the price is fairly expensive but it works very well.

Default Another option

I have also seen people use low pressure expanding foam with a mixture of steel shavings(from brake rotor machining). This gives the butt stock a heavier weight, lots of bench shooters not wanting to upgrade to a mcmillan or heavy weight stock will do this or fill it with a removable bag of sand.. But not recommended for hunting IMO

Thumbs up

Just did a new Savage 10/110 predator max1 with accustock and accutrigger in 22-250. Cut some strips of 1/4" thick rubber mudflap, arranged inside of the factory hollow stock and injected with expanding foam. Much better balance and added 4 ounces to the gun, doesn't sound like much but it worked well, and no hollow sound. Gun weighed 10lbs 2ounces, now weighs 10lbs 6ounces, with Leupold Mark AR 6x18 x40mm scope, bases / rings. First try at the range grouped Sierra blitzkings, 3shots into .224" @100yds. with Lapua brass/ cfe 223 powder/ fed. match primers, and ditto for V-max's except .336" @ 100yds. all else the same. These were 50gr. tips, avg. vel. was 4000 Fps. for both. I know savages get bashed but man this one shoots, the yote's are in trouble.

I used shipping peanuts stuffed in with a wood dowel, I wasn't trying too add weight just didn't like the hollow sound, I used R-12 fiberglass with good results as well

Thanks for all the responses!, I ended up using some Silicon and rigid foam. It adds a nice density to the stock with not much weight.
