Default Muley Buck 337

Landed a Muley Buck tag in 337 this year, Any thoughts or ideas?

I know sticking close to the river may be my best chance. Just thought I would

reach out and see what other's may have done in the past to be successful in

this zone.

Don't set your hopes too high.... the last shooter buck I saw in 337 was about 6 years ago.

I do hope you get lucky and prove me wrong though!

The best populations I have found were in the farm or fringe land.

Ya it's been a couple years since I have seriously hunted in there, I saw one real nice buck just outside drayton two seasons ago.

Took not a bad little muley last year near cochrane with a general tag, will see what this year brings!

I'm just a ways out of town. I'll try to keep an eye out for you. Maybe shoot me a pm close to season to check in.

Good luck in that zone. Numbers are way down. Lots of big predators out there.

Definitely be a good idea to log in a few trips to the wmu before purchasing a muley tag. It is not my main hunting area but I have hunted their several times in the last 4 season, mainly because it is closer to the city and a good area when you only have just the mornings to hunt. Seen white-tails but never came across a mule deer (doe or buck).

I usually hunt east of the hwy between cynthia and hwy 16, lots of crownland, hunting pressure as usual. If memory serves me correct then I remember there being a large grazing reserve site ( west of the wmu) hunted there late season for white tails, didn't see much but looked like good mule deer country.

Actually numbers looked good last year, or atleast to me they did. Took a topless whitey out of there, however I did see an unusually large amount of hunters. There is this one old/overgrown lease road that I like to go for a walk on for grouse, don't see many people during week days but came across 6 different hunting parties within the first km, and that was on a Tuesday!

Your experience is typical of the hunting in WMS in the area such as 337, 338,339, 330, There are some pockets of deer in decent numbers, overall the animals are thinned out and are gravitating to areas of best habitat, and the hunters are following them, when you find these spots you will see pick up trucks , camps, and deer tracks in the snow everywhere, drive a few miles and the hunters and tracks become few and far between unlike in the past when deer were everywhere and used marginal habitat. Lots of cats and wolves, they seem to be hardest on the mule deer, muleys are very scarce in these wmu's. You will see the most mule deer in these wmu's near farmland or communities as cats and wolves are a little less comfortable where there is a lot of people though they are getting much bolder than they used to be.
