If you dont want to use most of the battery waiting for a signal to have a 25 second conversation then get or rent an iridium. The only thing that the global star satellite`s are good for are the spots and even then get a spot 2 so that you know if your message went out.
I`m sure others would agree that this is no bull

If you are renting check out Roadpost. I rented from them in the past with no issues. That being said a friend recently did have some issues with them.

It has been a while, and I don't recall off hand but it wasn't unreasonable. They ship it out to you and when you are done you drop it in a Purolator envelope they provide and return it to them.

I bought an Irridium from Explorer Satellite a few weeks ago. I haven't activated it yet, but they were more than helpful and good to deal with.

another vote for Iridium. Have been in camps where guys are standing out by a lake trying to get a signal with globalstar. It could be a tv commercial "what ya doin, waitin for a signal, I"ll try my trusty iridium pnone, make your call, well mine went thru, good luck". Seen it plenty of times.
Also second the above post for Explorer Satilite. Excellant people to work with and very helpful. Don't know how it would be dealing with the border issue(They are located in Florida) but their service is super. If they notice your minutes running low or your sim card about to expire they will contact you. Dealt with another company before and it was always a struggle.

Iridium for sure. Communication group in Red Deer last year was 10/day and 2 bucks a minute. We are buying 1 this year.

I have the Northern Lights plan. 6-months, 200 minutes for $200. Minutes carry over if I renew after 6 months.
