Coating Cannonballs
Just wondering if anyone has any experience or insight into coating cannonballs? Any hints, tips or suggestions?
I picked up a handful of coated ones a couple of years ago, had to replace one and got some others in different sizes that aren't coated. Have to say, I definitely prefer them with a coating.

Why do you prefer the coated ones?

Someone had to ask! Because they are purty and catch more fish...
Actually, I like the coating because I've found they mark up other things if they ding something, especially when in transit. I've also found it helps the balls to get less dinged and marked up. I also prefer the look with a simple black rubberized coating.

Laugh if you want but I do believe that they can catch more fish. When I did a lot of salmon fishing I would paint them fluorescent green with a white belly. I often ran the lure close to the ball. Not exactly scientific but I think it helped.

I wouldn't discount it attracting salmon to an extent. Curious though, did you try to trial one side vs the other to see if a coloured ball made a difference?
I'd caution though, if that's all you did or used, it's a difficult comparator.

I fished both plain and painted side by side sometimes but I was hardly scientific about it. Since I can't fish there anymore I no longer paint them. I usually fish for lake trout now at greater depths. There's a huge number of variables various lines, lure action, where on the boat it is etc. It didn't seem to hurt and I felt good fishing painted ones.
This was in a river situation in fairly clear water using mostly J-plugs. Set back 8-15 feet and 10 to 20 feet deep. Often with heavy angler competition hence the short set back.

It's all good, wasn't trying to slag your preferences at all.
I'm fishing down up to 200' at times, I'd probably prefer a UV coating or glow as opposed to flashy colour. Also fish lakers too.

Haha...I really didn't know the difference. I have an opportunity to buy a couple used ones that are not coated.
Thanks.

Sometimes just feeling like you've got an advantage helps lol.

I agree 100%
I always like to try different things that go against conventional 'wisdom' or expertise.
I've purposely taken bananas on my boat, caught plenty of fish with them on board...

More often than not, they're not coated. On Van Isle I was able to get coated 15 pounders for $30, pretty good deal.
If you need some, there seems to be a guy on Kijiji in Strathcona County that has moulds for 12, 12 and 15 lb balls. Can't speak to their quality but the price is decent.
