Default Biologist and AEP engagement

Putting in draws throughout the US I receive all emails regarding management strategies.

“Meet and greet with the biologists”, sit down and talk management strategies, discuss new draws, asking hunters opinion... All kinds of interesting, information gathering sessions for both parties.

How come we don’t have interactions like that with Alberta bio’s and AEP?

I would say it has alot to do with budget. Also with them choosing to be proactive rather than remaining reactive. Our bios think they are actually doing a good job of “managing”, they probably don’t even know their methods are flawed because it is what they were taught. The last thing students want to hear when they leave the leftist leaf licking institutions of today is anecdotal info and common sense from underlings.

How far down this rabbit hole do you want to go?

-there are many states with a very strong hunting culture that is politically significant, therefore a greater level of respect is shown
-state f&w *generally* are much better funded than their provincial counterparts
-big game biologists in the US, especially in the western states, tend to be outdoorsmen not granola munching degree waving academics like here
-there is a better recognition of who works for who. As in, state f&w bios understand they are working for hunters, and without hunting they won’t have jobs. Here, they believe they are controlling and policing hunters. Very different attitudes.
-they don’t have the status Indian unregulated harvest problem. Not that that’s the fault of provincial bios, but it makes game management very difficult and questionable
