Default H4831 question

I'm reloading for a 270Win, 130gr Hornady SST. The most accurate powder according to one source is H4831sc. I have some H4831 without the sc. Will this produce similar results as the sc powder? I believe this is the difference between the same powder being short cut vs not short cut. Short cut meaning the strands of powder are short instead of regular length. In my limited way of thinking, this would make it faster burning, being as how there will be a larger surface area per volume.

Looking for enlightenment. Thank you

Data is interchangeable between the two

Use the starting load for H4831sc, and work up from there.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/10...okeless-powder

The article says it is an exact match to non short cut.

My 270 could't tell the difference, the sc meters better is all I can tell and you might get more sc into a case.

I crammed 60gr of this lovely powder into the casing and threw a 130 gr hornady pill on top, compressed load but man was it accurate...5 in a dime size hole out of my Remington BDL...sold the rifle to get a 7mm STW made...got caught up in the macho boom stick syndrome...

Default H4831

"Jack O'Connor" load was 60 grains H4831 with 130 gr bullet . I've found this often to be too hot..... definitely not a starting load. I've used SC and regular H4831 interchangeably with no apparent difference. My most consistent accuracy load uses flat base Sierra 130 spitzers and a couple grains LESS than 60 gr H4831 . Federal 210M primers. Work up loads carefully.

i can verify that SC meters better. I've also been told, it will have a more consistent velocity... but I personally wonder if that's a function of the metering.

Default two things

Jack O'Connor's scale was found to be out a tad and the military H4831 may not be identical to what's available today.Harold

I'd wager my scales differ from your scale a tad as well.

I'd bet that my lot of 4831 probably has a different burn rate than the one you have as well, especially since mine is around 5 or 6 years old.

It's meaningless, one way or the other, if you wanna jump straight into max to potentially over max loads without doing any load development you're gonna get your just reward.

Is it too much to just read a manual or two? You know those chapters at the front that deal with how to's, why's, and all that safety crap.

If you're not at least 10% smarter than what you plan to do, or mess with, maybe you should leave it the heck alone.

I've loaded H4831 and H4831sc interchangibly based on powder availability over the last 5 years and 73.0gr of either one always got me the exact same results. Exact. Over 1000 rounds.

Ive used 60gr of H4831 with 130s in every single. 270WCF Ive ever loaded for and its always worked fantastic.

It was also a factory loading for Federal for many years (premium Sierra).
