New ideas cooking
Glad to see this thread up again.
I'm cooking up some new ones as well, also had some good success with some of my creations last year.
Will post some pictures and hopefully some success stories this season.
Tight lines everyone, and make sure that ice is safe before getting too excited.
Cheers

I have been tying up a few of these from the above pictures from whatever materials I have, until I make a trip to Michaels. If the more expearanced white fish hunters could post what they would call maybe there top 5 or 10 best patterns and times in the season they work. I hear the yellow works pretty good in southern Alberta early on. So I tied up a few yellow variation. Man some of your guys have 100s of them in your boxes.
Thanks

Yep, this is one of the best all time AO threads, thanks to Zip. I picked up some more split rings and a few WWs yesterday. I'm planning on tying a few rigs this weekend to get ready for the upcoming season.

After reading this last week at work I thought I would head down to Airdrie and grab some stuff to start making w/w. Didn't find everything I wanted but got started. I couldn't find all 20 Ga wire had to settle for 26 as well. Only found 1 bead style and think they are too small but I will get more when I have more time.
Thanks all so far for the great info on this site as well. Looking forward to gull/sylvan whitefish this year.

Skawtty ... welcome & tks for sharing, you've got some nice combo patterns in brass/red, I'm sure they'll produce this season.
Cheers

Nice to read the positive feedback & continue to see members contributing & sharing information to help others on this thread/topic .
We’re about to start the 2018 hard water season and I’m sure there will be a number of new creative W/W patterns posted herein that will inspire others to either make or take up the hobby.
Tonight, I grabbed my 3 ice fishin rods from the garage, for those members that are wondering what works these are the patterns I ended my season with in late December before we departed to SoCal.
For those who follow my posts Barbie produced on the 2nd or 3rd day out so don’t overlook using a “red” color combo on one of your rods.
Tomorrow in the spirit of the Grey Cup, I may have to make a few W/W’s that match the winning teams colors. Should be easy I believe they’re both the same.
More to follow.
D.
AKA ... Barbie
Try to find some Pink Mag's they sure can help on slow days.

what's the material on the right bottom? looks like 'tin foil'?

None of these have caught any fish yet.... but they also have never been in the water so you just never know!

Does anyone have a source for thinner diameter solid "Yellow" wire ?
I ran out of the stuff I found years ago in EDM & the 100/pair wire I have isn't all that great to work with. The "Orange" is from the Cat 5 that I got at Cdn Tire, hoping to find some Yellow with a similar diameter. Nothing around here or R/D .... any suggestions ?
Joyprince ... the tin foil material you identified in wbaj's post is most likely "Lead" tape, I use it to swing weight my golf (irons) clubs. It's a novel idea to add weight to a W/W. Perhaps wbaj can share some further info.
Tks
D.

What’s more colorful the Mrs. collection of lost/found golf ball or my W/W’s ????
Came up with a few different patterns that may or may not work, I’m running out of ideas and colors, tried to make a few combo’s with a “Twist”.
Orange & Brown – used Cat 5 wire I got at Cdn Tire.
Diamond honing steel ideal for sharp hooks.
Brown & Yellow & Twist
Yellow & Red & Twist – Don’t like the heavier Yellow wire, will keep lookin for some thinner dia.
I tie 2 W/W’s on each rod, use 6 or 8 lb Floro leader material approx. 5 ft long & tie it to a mini barrel swivel to 10 lb braded line. I tie the top hook first approx. 12-14” from bottom, start the line through the hooks “Eye” facing up not down, then tie your knot, I use the double Trilene knot.
Tip – To get your W/W to sit Horizontal with the hook up after you tie the knot ….. loop the line back through the eye from the top going down through the eye and you will always have it sitting perfectly Horizontal .... see.
I tie the bottom W/W next, approx. 10 – 12” below the top hook and use a toothpick to get a nice small tight loop & tie a double Trilene knot.
Dec 11th “Line Up” … 1st , 2nd & 3rd String, going to give the Stampeders G-Cup champs a try & a couple of my most productive patterns will back them up. For those wondering, I got the "Green" glow beads from the Fishin Hole, Mr White sure likes them.
I ran out of high end hooks & using Mustard S82-3906B in 3XH/2XL Size "8" which is used as a Nymph hook.
Hope some of the info/pics are helpful.
Cheers
David

I was looking for some thinner dia. solid "Yellow" wire for some time, the stuff I had isn't great & no one here suggested a source.
Today I needed to stop at Princess Auto R/D and to my surprise I found some in the Surplus Products area in the back of the store, came in 3 colors and was <$5.00. It's the same dia. as Cat 5 and has a wire core so it wraps nicely/tightly on the hook shank.
Tied a Yellow/Orange & Yellow/Red W/W ... turned out great, will have to experiment with the Blue, it has possibilities.
For those who make your own W/W's, I recommend tying a few Candy Cane colors they have been very productive in both Sylvan & Gull.
Cheers

Material identification

The shinny material in the lower corner is lead sheeting.
I cut it into very narrow strips then wrap the hook with it usually in a tapered fashion from back to front. This adds weight to help sink the hook when fished. It should be noted that this is usually not required if you are wrapping the hook with wire as extra weight is not required.
I only do it his when making my "worm" out of rubber glove material. There is very little weight to this hook without a lead underbody.
BTW I caught several fish with this hook last season. A horizontal presentation fished slow at about the 6 or 7 foot level in 8 to 10 feet of water worked well.
Good luck!

Bassett ... further to the response from Mr SNAPFisher, the info in post # 252 herein, should help including the pic's demonstrating the process on how to tie 2 w/w's in tandem.
The key to success is loop the line back through the hook eye and for the bottom W/W leave a sufficient tag end say 3/8 - 1/4" when you clip off the end piece. I adjust my bottom W/W & pull on the tag end to tighten up the knot to get it to sit horizontal. You need to be aware of your hook size and the amount of wire wrap, too much is too heavy & the extra weight will drag it down vertical.
Have a look and if you need further clarification send me a P/M.
Cheers
David

Here are a few "test patterns" I tied up while watching that madness on TNF.
Not my best work because I couldn't take my eyes off that game for long...lol.
Test flight happens with the fine copper and white bead Saturday.

Scott ... I'm hoping to get to try one of these prototype's out on Gull next week. They look so yummy those big Whites in Gull would inhale them down to their gut, may have to pinch the barbs down.

Here’s to hoping I can create something!!
Could only find glow beads on the pre-made “zak tackle” hooks.
Have an idea for the pink UV squids in a wire worm.

Dec 15th ... we were out on Sylvan (Norglenwold) today, these worked for me, was a bit surprised how the Whites chased the Bright Yellow in the late morning & early afternoon on a sunny day. They showed more interest in it than the Candy Cane Y/O.

My fishin Buddy gave me a handful of his prototypes to try first thing in the AM, by early afternoon, he took most of them back and that's when things started to get competitive. More to follow on this story .... it's got to do with a dumb song about M-Rats & Love!

I let Zip recover his good luck today as I stayed home cuz... well... Football!
Made a few new ones while watching (a few sloppy ones as it's hard to wrap tight when you are laughing out loud at the Cowboys!).
Cheers,
Scott.
