I and the other new homes will have to be patient - but things are looking promising so far! You might even run across one or two of these little guys/gals in your hunting travels soon.
Get those dogs workin' - and takes loads of pics! Can't wait for next year's thread. Have a great season All!

He worked on fitness and got him into a bunch of sharptail, a luxury I didnt have. So he's getting first scent figured out and the differences between grouse, partridge and pheasants and when to track and when to point.
I have been working on getting him as bird crazy as possible while doing whoa yard work. I'm not concerned about it yet but next year we have to step up our game. I can't wait to see where he's at by the end of the year.

It will be hard but here is the biggest tip I can give you. Your gonna be mad.
DO NOT SHOOT A BIRD YOUR DOG BREAKS POINT ON. Have fun this year and relax. but if he breaks point whoa him up and tell him leave it. that is the greatest thing you can do for him this year. I board and train as well and if you are interested next spring let me know.

This season is training not Hunting for us. I'm sure we are close. I've had him out lots by myself, in which he is getting better but it's tough to enforce by yourself. So we've worked on whoa at home a lot lately. Hopefully go out this weekend and see if I've gained.
If your bored this season feel free to come down and show me some good shorthairs.

I put Ti right on the scent trail, and he was getting a bit, but not enough to get him birded up like he has for me in years previous, though this was a fresh trail with a wounded bird at the end. I pushed the bird out of the cover again, but Ti spotted it this time. The rooster had a 40 yard lead on him, and was 60 yards from the creek, with Ti being 100 yds from that same creek. Ti got his mouth on the tailfeathers just as the birs went over about a 5 ft bank into cattails. Ti followed with a thud. I handed the shotgun to my wife and started running to rescue my dog, as i was sure he was broken or drowning, by the sounds i was hearing. I got to the bank, and he was swimming right behind the rooster, with sheer determination. he got the bird in his mouth, then i grabbed scruff and drug the pair of them up onto solid ground. It isn't his nicest upland work, but i was damn proud of my old dog after it was all done and we could relax. He slept a solid day after that affair.

An awesome event to remember your dog by! He deserves retirement.

Threeforthree, I like that shot of the pup. I forget to take the blasted camera with me, when I leave the truck, most of the time.

Pre Season
The supreme gundog Griphen Le Griffon is resting up for the upcoming skirmish .
Looks like a big year for burrs .....hunt for an hour ...de-burr for an hour ..
Thinking of giving him the big shave before the season , after two weeks
he is bald anyway , you pull out a lot of hair removing those burrs.
Also wire hair really holds on to that cow-poo...
I am itchin to get going W101

Hows the Roughie count in your neck of the woods. I have found a mess of sharpies this year, 2 hatches but found only 2 roughies in total, and I have been pounding about 20 quarter sections hard. Im suspecting alot of coyote kills over the winter as we had no snowfall to speak of.

They don't all pick up the burrs. All depends on the line of Griffs and coat.

Thank you!
The hardest part was that we knew we had a very good dog but we kept making training errors and handling mistakes, but not yesterday!

Just giving credit where it's due! Success in UT takes dedication! I hear ya about making mistakes and the dog doing well despite.... I'm hoping to avoid repeating history with my latest 2 month old addition.
Now, you gotta take that test proven girl and get 'er done in the field! Have fun!

This is one of the best threads on AO. OK .... it is the best thread.
Will there be any problem with posting too many pictures on one thread that stretches over a couple of years?
If not...let us see more pictures.

Thought I would add a pic of my guy. He hasn't been able to finish a trial yet (he has a poor handler) and experienced last hunting season as a 3 month old. Sleeps on the bed and eats table legs. Won't enter the water unless he is traveling 30 miles an hour. Loves to fight, eat garbage and smell the ladies.
Its going to be a good season.
+1 on this thread (if I haven't done that already)

Yes, indeed. Reminds me of a lab (black) I used to own. I loaned him to an uncle for some goose shooting. This dog would look for birds coming in and (I swear) make sure you were looking, too. The first birds come in. Bang, bang, bang. Nothing falls. Dog looks at shooter. One of those long, dog looks. Next batch of birds come in. Bang, bang. Nothing falls.
My uncle looks down and the dog is gone. He's headed home at a slow trot. No look back. Just went home.
It's pretty bad when your dog gives up on you.

Hello H&T
The field bred dogs do not get their tails docked to the degree the show bred springers do. They are essentially two distinct breeds. Link for more info here.
