Ya that was me I figure it is polite to read the full thread before posting.
As far as your post about suckers in stock trout ponds. You are right in that situation we would not have to worry about the suckers eating the trout eggs. But because there is no natural predator for the sucker in that pond there is no way to control the numbers of suckers. With the increase of suckers and the fact that the suckers eat the same food as the trout it will not take long before the over run of suckers and competition for food has a drastic effect on the trout. Your next question was has anyone ever eaten suck? Yes they can be pickled, canned, fish patties but the best is taking a fish under 2 lb and smoke it they taste great.

The law allows for the killing of suckers, and wasting them. It is not vandalism, yet.

There is a legal difference in the classification of Gophers and Suckers.
Suckers are a non-game fish.
Gophers are a Nuisance under the Agricultural Pest Act.
An open mind can see the management of animal and fish species needs to be practiced on a fine scale. Each field/waterbody is unique.

Catostomids are most often found in rivers but can be found in any freshwater environment. Their food ranges from detritus and bottom dwelling organisms (such as crustaceans and worms), to surface insects and small fishes.

The aquatic insects are the ones that feed on the algae, diatoms etc... The fish then eat the insects. We don't really have the algae grazing fish in Alberta like you see in some aquarium fish species.

I might have to give that a try if I ever get myself a smoker. Fish that aren't top predators are usually the healthiest to eat.

LOL
I remember that...hence my aquarium fish reference. It was a very big one if I recall. As a kid I bought them small and raised them big and sold them back to the pet store for a profit.

I think suckers are cool looking, and there's a whole bunch of different species.
I caught a 6lb sucker in lower Arrow lake this summer and it had a super long mouth.
It was awesome.
Today I caught a sucker in the Bow and Tezma oversaw it's safe return.

We used to catch 3-400 lbs of them and can them. If canned in tomato sauce they're quite similar to tuna. What can I say, we lived off the land. Fried or roasted in the over they taste like mud. Also, a half 5 gallon pail left sealed over summer with a few other ingredients will draw cannines along ways.

I've caught many white suckers growing up on the NSR, and honestly can't understand why people hate them so much, especially just for their looks. Hard fighting fish, and still a native part of most ecosystems. That's like killing off burbs because they're eating the perch that the pike needs.... like c'mon...

I treid a 2 pounder last weekend and was dissapointed only a 6 and a half pound pike took it, but that was the second pike that hit it, so Im sold. I had a bunch of 3 and 4 inch suckers and the walleye cleaned me out, they love them.

lots and lots in the k lakes wayne. not sure how'd you go about targeting them though without the ability to fish bait. to watch the bulls chase them up into the shallows after ice out is a sight to behold. they sure know how to catch em. witnessed JR catch one on a rap once, that was cool. all things are possible.
