if you feel like your life is threatened it shouldn't matter what's legal because preserving life comes before law.

that being said cows are like big dumb dogs. they might eat things, rut stuff up, swarm you when you leave the house but they aren't going to hurt you. tell them to "GET!" if they don't listen smack em, if they still don't listen smack em harder. repeat until you achieve desired results.

heck if you smack em hard enough enough times they might go back through the gate

Some cows can be scary. Couple years ago I was driving down a highway and saw someone's cow out. The owner of the cow happened to come by and I stopped and was going to help him herd her into his pasture, but the damn thing spotted me and headed straight for me, not by accident. I grew up on a farm with cows and can tell the difference between a cow that is just trying to get by you and one that is aggressive and trying to run you down.

Most cows will go when told to, but there are a few that are what we used to call "wild" and if we wound up with one it either got sold or butchered.

Don't shoot the cows, in Alberta we have archaic laws about gunning them from days before ranchers had quads and post pounders.
That's too bad because I heard that torkdiesel was looking for a couple guys. lol

If deer who lived on the old mans farm wandered onto his land, the poster would probably not be complaining, even if he had no hunting licence. May even post his land.

Well you have your answer. If he's shot dogs on his property he will understand if you fill your freezer. Enjoy the BBQ

My apologies for stirring the pot on what seems to be a very sensitive subject.
You were advised on what to do according to the "Alberta Stray Animals Act" by repeated posters. You chose to ignore it.

Buddy ,if it was one of MY cows that came into YOUR yard and roughed you up, I sincerely hope you'd have the good sense to shoot the damn thing. I would understand.

4 pages on this??? Question was answered long ago boys! Horse throughly beaten. Call LIS they come and take the animals at owners expense. If the problem persists the animals are hauled to the nearest livestock market, again at owners expense and sold. NEEEEEXT topic!

Maybe it was a steer that caused the confusion you think?

I now have physio costs as well as missed work to deal with. The owners response was look for cows before you go outside and you won't get killed. Can I shoot these cows if they get out again or is there some way to force a rancher in Alberta to sell his livestock (he only has about a dozen left, that's all he can "manage")? Any direction here would be very much appreciated!

Best advice so far unless you want to try to be a good neighbour and help with the fences

If the original poster has not yet called the brand inspector, they are a troll or do not really want to solve this problem.

I don't generally use forums so I'm not sure if I have to close this out or someone else. We did end up calling a brand inspector and looked up the stray animals act as recommended. Thanks for the help!

"Was it a bull or a cow? You seem confused."

Was this near Jenner? Maybe it was a cow trapped in a bull's body.

Obviously you've never had this done to yourself. He has probably done this crap his whole life, not just since he's become 'old'. You can't have your livestock charging neighbours and damaging thousands of trees. If its a one time thing, well then you help the neighbour , but this sounds ridiculous. I'd find out if he has family, get them involved if possible and end it, or you will never live in peace.

be a good neighbour , you might make a friend , round up all the neighbours and fix his fence, then ask him for a box of steak to help you recover.

that would explain the unpredictable and odd behavior of the animal, because most cows are well known for attacking vehicles in between grazing and sleeping
