I go out with a can of spray rifle or bow season. Its a little silly I know. Especially since im carrying a 7MM. But I've used it before and its worked. And I like my security blanket.
regardless, stuff happens in the bush that ya cant prepare for.

I often hunt alone since my hunting partner died in a vehicle accident. I just got back from the mountains. Save your *#*%**'g moralizing. One of me is safer in the bush than 3 of most guys.
"That's what he gets".....what a creepy comment.
ps: I put a 5x6 elk in the butcher shop yesterday, too, BTW.

Simmered,
Good to hear your friend will be OK. Can't imagine the sheer terror of being attacked like that. I'm curious, was he bowhunting and also packing a gun for protection? I've pondered the need to do that, especially when hunting for elk, with all the cow calling, etc. A Rossi Ranch Hand may be a good option.

Unfortunately for this guy things went sideways fast, but no fault of his really. Just the way the cookie crumbled. He proved he's a capable individual by getting out of it in decent shape. Sometimes even the best can be a victim of circumstance. I share your sentiment Rocky, many people are fine alone and your best hunting partner is common sense.

Anything can happen with two or three guys, that gives the bear
three more chances. What lesson did he learn here? I hunt alone, even if I have other guys with me. One guy makes less noise than two so I sneek around by myself. This poor guy just stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time. I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Although every hunter is aware of the risks of being in he bears backyard, why would you put itself at risk too. For all of you who have families and hunt alone, shame on you guys for thinking about yourself first rather then your family. At least with two people, you have way better odds of not being a target wether its a bear, cougar, wolf or whatever animal comes along. Stuff like this does happen, don't get me wrong but it's just foolishness to go Into bear country alone. Well hope your views change next time you get mauled by a bear and leave your family
For that one animal that is not worth it. Hunting is
More than bagging an animal. Being able to
Get out and enjoy with friends
And family is what it's
All about and too learn about nature. It's just a bonus if you do shoot something.
At the end of the day most important thing is to be home safely. PERIOD!
Say what you want...I just hope he is ok and maybe thinks differently next time he wants to head to the woods alone. It's not worth it!
Speedy recovery to you and it just sucks when something like this happense. Puts us all on edge.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and no one is more right or wrong. I just see life differently then most careless people. And no it's not because
Im scared or panzy.

Ok your a scared panzy, do you hold hands with your BUDDY out there. If I thought like you I would probably stay home, and watch wild tv and get my jollys.

Yes,I'm 100% sure!
I see between 50- 60 bears every year. I know the difference
If he was a blackie I would have arrest him on the scene.

bear attack
Bear attack. Sorry for the hunter.
Sorry for the guy that suggests it was because the hunter was alone.
There are risks when you go into the backcountry by yourself. There are risks when you go with a group. If he had been hunting with a friend, its not likely they would have been holding hands, or been close enough for the friend to help out as the bear was attacking.
I don't mind hunting alone, and sometimes prefer it.

Really ? Would that make you feel better?
You should go hunting with James! It's people like you two that makes me lose my faith in humanity!

Maybe sledder1 is right instead of maybe (probably) being charged the hunter would be better off dead.
Unreal.

Risk
Life involves risk.
There are the risk takers and the risk aversive.
Then there are people in between.
Which one are you?
I hope the gentleman can hunt again.

Your right anything can happen...then again nothing happens too! Been hunting alone for about 50 years. Started solo hunting when I was eight no bears have killed me yet. No Sasquatch women have had their way with me either....maybe one day! Damn my family spent 2 centuries trapping alone an no one got chewed up by a bear. If your afraid to be alone stay home and play xbox, and keep the door locked. Me I'll mostly wander the bush alone, I figure it's some of the best company I'll encouter.
