One cartridge to rule
I've been using a 7mm Rem Mag for 35 years. Have shot everything fom buffalo to coyotes with it. No reason to ever change.

Then there's a bunch a 'Veronica's' as well, they have cachet but are high-maintenance or you're sacrificing something (often magazine capacity and barrel life)
Did you pick a Betty or a Veronica for the woman in your life? (Betty's are where it's at)

Midge. .375 H&H. A little stout in recoil but not ridiculous. Eat right to the bullet hole. Flatter shooting than a lot would imagine.

I have one and would still pick the 7 Rem Mag over the 280AI, faster is better, or so we are led to believe....:-)

This is an easy choice. I'd have to go with 7 mm rem mag with 168 grs of Berger goodness. The .280 rem would be a close second.

As a friend of mine says. Cartridges are more alike than different.

Yes, 7mm RM, one cal, but many loads.
I have tried from 130 gr Speer up to 168 VLD.
Ok, 175 gr Win factory loads too I guess.

If I was hunting mostly moose and elk with the occasional deer, I would opt for a 300 win. mag with 180 gr. bullets. If were hunting mostly deer with the occasional moose and elk, a 280 rem. with 140 gr. bullets.

The best one is the one that you can shoot most accurately.
I use a.270 and 300 Weatherby. If I had to choose only one it would probably be the 300.

I use my 264Winmag for everything from Elk to Coyotes, I love the round, faster then a 7mm and less recoil. If I had to choose something else it would be a 280AI/7mmRM.

I picked my wildcat I'm shooting, 6.5mm Sherman Shortmag, to be the 'cartridge to rule them all' in a short action. Based on the SAUM case. (Think shorter WSM case) I'm pushing 160 gr bullets over 3000 fps. It's not lightning fast, but very respectable in a true short action cartridge that fits in magazines with bullets seated out the the lands. Love shooting it.

I have bought and sold a few rifles and keep coming back to the .300 Ultra Mag. Can load her down if I feel the need; but generally a 200 grain Accubond is a great choice for any situation. Some say overkill but I have always said, "There is only one stage of dead." In the end I'm gonna throw another vote in for the "Whatever calibre you can deliver the payload where it needs to be everytime." Some shooters can grab anything and shoot it well. Then you have the guys at the range shooting a 30-06 with a pair of coveralls folded up between their shoulder and the recoild pad.

I thought about doing that wildcat... But after looking into it, I'd sooner build a 6.5 wsm if I was to build something like that... But I like the idea of the 26 nosler better...

I've shot and loaded for both and much prefer the 6.5 SAUM but that's just me.

6.5wsm is not a lot slower than a 26 nosler and takes about 15 grains less powder.

I am not an expert but how many cartridges were born from the 30-06 case?
IMHO the the 30-06 is the cartridge that was made right the first time. I have used it as well as dads old 308 since i started hunting. But im certainly not suggesting that you only need one gun!

I'm willing to poke the bear,,,,,, a 243 is the best,,,, with a well placed shot and a quality bullet, it will kill anything everywhere,,,,,lol ok for real now, it upsets me to think you are planning on one gun only but if that was so then I would choose the 06,, but,,,,, if you eventually plan on another one then go for a 25-06 or the 7mm08 and then your second could be 300 win mag,,,, the 30-06 would be an overlap of them both

30-06
30-06 is hard to beat, ammo always available and from 110 - 220gr, I hand load 125gr for coyotes and 165gr for everything else. I shoot coyotes to moose and never had one walk away. my 44mag would work as well upto 150yards (iron sights).
