Well after a couple hours of winching we finally got in and got our baits set up. Found some huge wolf tracks and a few bear tracks. Was a great day.

Crappy weather weekend round Calgary I'm afraid. I'll probably just go in to work to do some painting. Hopefully get back into the 406 some time next week. I bought two new trail cams. Plus I'd like to switch out the card on the one that's out there and see if I've got any cool pics. Saw some moose in the area on the way in.

Hey, thanks. I usually end up taking a bunch of pictures whenever I go into the bush. I tossed a bunch of them up on this thread if you want to take a look at my others at all. That pic is probably my favorite though. They're all mostly from around the 406-ish area.

Default Bear hunting

A thread on bear hunting seems amazing. Here in Manitoba, the amount of snow on the ground is unbelievable with the forecast for another 10cm. Only way that anyone can even get close to the bait sites is by snowmobile. I believe that warmest temperature this spring has been a plus 5 two weeks ago.
Our deer poulation has been hammered and a season is questionable.

Good luck to those more fortunate

Still early for bears up here but maybe a guy'll get a crack at a wolf in the mean time. Got set up yesterday & it took some elbow grease to get it done.
Best of luck everybody !

Went to the 406 to check my camera and drop a couple more two days ago. Snow was even deeper than a month ago when I placed them. Wish I hadn't taken my skis out of the car a couple weeks ago. The camera I had was viewing a cut line, and the snow was so deep I postholed to my crotch the whole way in (I'm a long legged 6'3"). Definitely too deep for ungulates, but I was hoping I might get some dogs or something, but I had zero hits in the whole month.

Went back out today to introduce a girl from work to shooting, and it dumped pretty hard yesterday, so the snow around my cameras will be even deeper. I may have to reevaluate my hunting grounds if I'm going to harvest a bear before the season ends.

It will still not be over 8 C 'til Friday in Edm & north, 5 more days.
Buy by Saturday it goes up fast, near 18C from then on.
Sets us back 15 days compared to last year, taking a bite out of the bear season.
We will have our baits out on April 29, snow should be near gone buy it will be sloppy and muddy.
Just hope we can maneuver the few creek banks we need to.

Good luck to all. I was getting all my ducks in a row to bait but now I am headed overseas. I have 2 pails of strawberry topping from DQ, I made a lollipop, I have a butcher giving me a months supply of meat scraps, and I also have some beavers on order from a trapper. If anyone is interested please pm me. Would love for a fellow hunter to be able to use it. I am located by Drayton Valley, meat scraps in Stony Plain.

Was up east of Valleyview Tues and Weds it could not get my bait set.
South side of the creek ravine in the bush still had a ft + of snow.
Had to winch the quad back up after our tour. Took near an hr to get out.
Next trip will be May 17th at the earliest. Ugh, short season.

Default snow's still deep in places

Almost made it. You wouldn't think the snow is still that deep out in the bush up here but surprisingly… It Is. Old betsy was doing some hopping today… No bears for me yet. Won't be long now though. Pushing near + 20º Today.

Thanks,
Fresh meat & doughnuts with a bit of fryer grease is what's on the menu. Not sure where you're located but if you wait til next weekend you should be fine with wheels pretty well anywhere in the province. Use the racks on your bike…I did for years. It'll take a few extra trips but what the hey. Actually used a 2 wheel dolly cart out here in the beginning. It was though.
