Great pics guys! Looks like everyone is off to a great start. Season opened the 15th here but my work shift held me back until friday afternoon. Set a mix of 110s, floats, and one colony in what i call "the Culvert of Doom." Would love to get more colonies out but i mostly ditch trap and the water around here has dropped a lot in the last month or so, leaving a lot of culverts exposed.
Here's a few photos of a couple of my checks so far. I'm sitting at 67 so far. the Culvert of Doom has provided 22 of them.

Hey PCP. How were the primeness on those rats? I am in south central ab and you seen the one rat I posted still pretty black. It has been +20C here the last week or so whether weather has anything to do with it or shorter days not sure.

what are rolling them in peter?sawdust? they sure look nice after the roll.
1576, he's a good kid(at times!). he's currently in the back yard. practising making dirthole sets. bedding a mouse trap, placing different kinds of guides and then baiting with milkbones. the dogs are getting frustrated.
pretty funny! it'll be pretty cool when he gets a coyote on a set he made himself.

Sorry PCP it wasn't a jab I was more comparing my location with yours as I believe you are the closest active member to me. The northern animals I would only assume are prime earlier than down south. As the deer rut is usually earlier. I am actually just inquiring how the rats looked so i can pull the trigger on my fall ratting.

Trapping this area early because of freezing out,and I need to manage my time along with working full time nights,go get them if they are in shallow area's,they will only freeze out and be wasted IMO,cheers Peter

Hey guys I have a question.
I put out 20 subs yesterday. Today I had 40+ Rats.
After tomorrow I won't be able to check them until Friday due to work. Should I leave them in or pull them?I guess what I'm asking is will they be okay in the subs for a couple days?

Pound a finishing nail near the top of the surveyors stake about 6 inches from the top. Pound another one six inches below that barely sticks out. I used victor #1 that have a hole on the bottom of the trap to hang on the bottom nail and I put a small chunk of carrot on the top nail. Then a drop of my muskrat lure at the top of the stake. I push it in the mud so the carrot is about 2-3 inches above water and the trap should be just under the water. I run high success catches and mostly on hind feet. They drown real quick and are not easy to see for trap thieves. You can put 5 or 10 of them in a small pond all 3 feet apart and you don't have to waste time looking for that special spot to put a trap. To me it is simple and effective and I can carry 100 sets in my truck and put them out in no time at all.

I passed the 200 muskrat mark with these 15 that I caught yesterday. There were 3 whoppers in the mix. I've been constantly moving my traps and it looks like I found a new honey hole the other day.
The shed is starting to get full again so I'm just about ready to make my second trip to the ATA to turn in some fur. It's only 20 minutes up the road and chatting with the folks there and getting tips from AJ about my fur handling is nice.

Bill, you're in and I'm just wrapping up on muskrats for awhile. The lake was froze over with a thin layer of ice yesterday afternoon and my floats were froze in. Surprisingly, I did manage to catch 5 from in the evening before it froze I guess. Today wasn't as bad and I caught 7. With the sub zero temps forecasted at night and the single digit temps during the day, I decided to pull my floats tomorrow. Coyote snares are going up this week but I'll be putting out colony and submarine traps once they are done. The rats up this way are really starting to lose their dark markings pretty quick now.
Good luck and Happy Trappin'.

Hahaha ya dave. Im just trying to get some ditch rats. From my count I think the max I can get is 6. We don't have a tonne of water around here so these rats are gonna be froze out. They have been a bit of a challenge. They have been missing my colony traps and finding a way around my 120s. Caught a couple in the 120s so far so I'm gonna think out of the box here tomorrow. I'll let you know what happens.

Bill, have you thought about putting a piece of carrot on the trigger of your 120's and trapping them on the bank? They'll find it and they can't resist a little snack.

I have a couple of those sets out and not one touched. Odd? I even peeled the carrots a bit. Left fresh peelings in water and shore then baited. It is a small ditch 5 foot wide and 40 foot long 3 inches deep. I will be setting up some lathe sets next year like nube for my deeper sloughs.
