Default For guys from Ontario

What ever happened to Peterborough Guns in Ontario?

That shop was one of Dorothy's (Arcade) sources to bring guns out west.

One chap from Peterborough used to work at Edmonton Sporting Goods.

He moved back. Wife. Too bad. He was a really nice guy.

Gunther talked me into a 375 one fine afternoon and boy am I ever glad he did! That rifle has seen thousands of hours of use and a whole bunch of rounds.

Grew up near the border in N.B. we would go across to Houlton Maine with my grandfather and go to 'the Rod and Gun Shop' and then to 'Foggs'. Wooden barrels full of surplus Garands and Springfields, and every other item that a little kid could only dream about having one day. That was back in the day when you could drive across the border, buy a gun and drive back through customs with it sitting in the open on the seat beside you, the customs officer might want to look at the gun because he wanted to see your new gun, sometimes sit at the border with gramps BSing for a half hour or until the next car came along.

Goods in Comox. Was located right outside the front gates of the Base. Had a pretty good customer "Base" at hand.
The owner offered nothing but good deals, good selection, good advice and good stories. And the odd time...good whiskey.

Gors Sports Line use to be in Olds. Lyle Gorsline ran it and it was the hotspot for outdoor gear in that area for many years. Lyle did everything from gunsmithing to fixing snowmobiles. He was one of the first dealers of skidoo. I bought my first gun from him when I was 16. It was a CIL model 830 in 30-30 calibre. Shot my first moose with it. I miss the type of shop Lyle ran.

In Lethbridge...Plainsman Sports was a good store...good selection, fair prices and the Old Hungry Hounds when Jim Provic owned it was a great place to deal with. Sadly both now long gone.

back in the late sixties there was a gun smith in downtown Calgary. I brought a 3006 in for a friend and he made it into an 300 H&H magnum. Sure wish I could remember his name. Their was also a gun shop in Pincher Creek. Cheroke Sports in Blairmore first at the mall and then downtown.

Bought my first new shotgun, a Remington 870 left hand, from Al Simmons Gun Shop in Hamilton.

When I lived in central Alberta did some business with Emile of Many Guns near Blackfalds, and The Mountainman southwest of Rocky. Both were great places to visit and spend some time.

Default Who remembers old Simpson.

Got my first hand gun at Simpson and Lea in downtown Calgary in 1965. Old Mr Simpson gave me $5 off because I was a student. My Browning Challenger cost $60 brand new with pistol rug. And, I still have it and shoot it regularly.

I remember my Dad not liking the stores name, stating that 'guns are not toys'. It took me a while to dis-engrain some of his influence to where I was no longer looking at guns the way a Puritan views pornography.

Army & Navy was not a gun shop but at one time they sold ammo. Recall buying a case of 500 Imperial 22 shells for less than 10 bucks. Used to love those imperial shells.

Default favorite old gun stores

Have to go with Uncle Bens in downtown Edmonton. I bought a Spanish made 10 gauge side by side there in 1973 for $99. The thing weighed 13lbs and still kicked like a mule.

Default Guncraft

Guncraft on Edmonton trail in Calgary, I bought my first rifle there. I was young and had a budget of three hundred and fifty dollars, the guy brought out a like new Ruger 338 with a scope and sling ready to use. I misheard him with the price and told him I could not afford it, he had to tell me twice that it was $300.00 my older brother practically yelled at me for not listening! I hunted with that rifle for several years before trading it off on my 7mm. Loved that place! Bought a lot of Christmas presents for my dad and of course myself there.

Brian's store has undergone name changes 1-2 times and at least 2 moves. His store is called Proline Shooters II and is located on the north side of 9th Av in Inglewood.
