Dog and i were out backpacking near ministik lake bird sanctuary. Dog alerted me to something about 250 yards to my left. Wind blowing my direction , as we got closer dog was getting more and more wound up figured a deer, or a moose. Came around a bend in the trail very very large bear 40-50 yards ahead he looked up my dog went nuts trying to get at him bear ran away.( had bear spray in hand just in case).
Not anywhere near as worrying as the nigh before, had 3 very good sized coyotes circling my tent. no food inside, just my dog and I. Come dawn used half a can of spray to make them back off.

Saw one southeast of Cardston in 108 a couple years ago in November. Oddest thing I've ever seen, it was running at a good pace towards the hills.

Definitely a few in that area, I spotted two blacks just off of RR 213 running into Ministik about a month ago while checking some cams in the area.

For those interested in Grizzly Bear research... here's a chance to get involved via the Grizzly Scat App. Sightings (and rub trees) can be reported through the app from across Alberta but scat collection is only in the pilot study area this year.

This is the first time outdoorsmen and women have an opportunity to contribute directly to grizzly bear research that will be used to develop population estimates and contribute to long term trend monitoring. It would be nice to see the pilot be as successful as possible and continue in future years. This could be the answer for annual population monitoring across the entire province. Remember sightings just tell us where bears are at a point in time (occupancy)... DNA is needed for developing population estimates.

Android App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...yscatapp&hl=en

iOS App coming soon.

I spotted a small one today just north west of peace river, down the long lake road. Didn't have chance for a picture.

Default All around...

Some 35 years ago just several km west of Slave Lake (real giant, almost had me for a dinner), and also in Swan Hills (Swan Hills subspecies, smaller but very fierce). Some 5 years ago at the confluence of Peace and Smoky rivers. These days regularly some 15 km SE of Sundre. Not counting, of course, all those I have seen in the Kananaskis area and further south.

Default Keephills

Right south of Transalta's Keephills Plant. Chased it down the middle of the road for a few hundred yards. Silvertip. Must have wandered up the river valley.

North East of the confluence of 22 and 22x on one of our hay quarters, saw a wolverine as well down by the same spring I saw the bear rooting around by.

Default Just west of Okotoks

My brother has a place east of Millarville and just west of Okotoks. Last summer he had a sow and too cubs stripping the crab apples of his tree right in front of the house.

This area which is essentially 25 mins outside of the Calgary city limits is crawling with cougars.

My Old man also encountered a sow with 2 cubs just north of Whitecourt in mid 90's.

Seen a huge griz 2016, Virginia Hills, further north of Whitecourt.

We've seen the odd one west of Dead wood near our trapline. Also east of the highway near the farm. Even have trail cam pictures of them in front of the cabin.
