I'm pretty new to hunting, but I can vouch for the .30-06 in a Model 70 featherweight- I don't feel too limited in regards to what species I could hunt and the fact that ammunition is much cheaper than a lot of the magnum rounds was a huge plus for me. With a scope and full magazine it has to be close to eight pounds, so its heavy enough to soak up recoil (which was admittedly more than I had expected). It feels great to me but everyone is different, try and get a feel for a bunch of different brands and calibre's if you can, maybe there is a gun range close by you that has firearms on hand.
