To everyone that is truely concerned, our fellow hunter is doing okay.
To quell a couple myths, it was a sow and a cub. The cub wandered to close and went up the tree. Mother bear caught the scent and went on the war path. I don't care what anybody says, I'm certain safety in numbers here would not have helped this situation. ****ed off momma bear is not something to contend with. And that is as much as I am willing to say on a public forum.
To you trolls out there who have nothing better to do than look for ways to insult people to make themselves seem better. This gentlemen was a fellow firefighter and didn't think twice about helping others. Its a sad day to see the "he deserved" it comments, especially from certain people on here that I am reluctant to call fellow hunters. Its evident that a large percentage of hunters out there enjoy the outdoors by themselves and unfortunately sometimes things happen.
I'd personally be more worried about driving in the city then hunting by myself! Way more fatal accidents on the roads then hunters being attacked, now whats more dangerous.
Take care buddy I got a cold beer waiting for ya when you get back

@ simmered
Good to hear your friend is doing okay! Thanks for the update.
One person on this thread was cutting him down, everyone else was supportive. You are talking about trolls (plural). Not sure who else you mean.

I KNEW there was going to be aboard member that knew the guy.
We are a smaller tighter group than one would think.
Simmer, sorry for the trolls. Again, best wishes and prayers for your buddy.
James, man up and fire off an apology here.

I was listening to the radio and it said he had to walk about 5KM to get cell service, so I think he will recover just fine.
FWIW, I've hunted and trapped for over 40 years , much of it alone, and will continue to do so.
I really don't believe it is any more dangerous than driving down highway 63 alnoe when I have to go to South for a meeting , or some other reason.
In fact, I think hunting is much safer!!

Most hunting accidents happen between people who are hunting together. One member of the hunting party accidently shoots another member of the group. Your far more apt to be killed driving to your hunting area then out in the woods hunting.

According to a study I saw in Bowhunter a few years bqck, that is not the case anymore - trestands incidents are now the major cause fatalities!
Accessing, egressing, and of course falling asleep up there with no fall restraint!!
People still get killed every year by their huntign partners however, and it seems that in most cases I have read about , all the people involved are always described as " very experienced woodsmen"!!

Now I'm not a tree hugger and have harvested most big game animals in Alberta, however if I was the hunter in this situation, I wouldn't be calling for the bears head. I used scents to mask the human scent. I never had an incident involving bears in this manner, however I can understand how it could happen.

x2.
i don't believe there was anything more your friend could have done based upon what is known.
He's a victim of circumstance.
It is obvious to me though that some people have no idea how easily a bear can disappear behind a log or in knee high grass or how fast they are in a charge.
You could have the gun in your hands and one up the spout and still not get a shot off if it was a 20-30 meter rush.
Every time one of these bear threads comes up I'm reminded of how hard it actually is to find a good guy to go bear hunting with.

Not going to beat a dead horse here, just hoping a fellow outdoors man a speedy recovery from an unfortunate incident.
On the note made about hunting alone being a stupid thing than I must be full on retarded as I was hanging trail cams in the middle of the bush today miles from my truck with out a gun.
to each their own.

Great news! I can't imagine having to go through this....
I thought about this circumstance and I can only imagine how terrifying this would really be....there you are enjoying the outdoors in some nice quiet area when all the sudden you are pulled in from behind to an unprovoked struggle to survive....sounds like what ever you friend did it was about the best and right he could do under the circumstances.
Speedy recovery!

I wish the gentleman a speedy recovery. I myself like to walk in the bush with my dog. He has saved me from walking right into a grizzly. Even if one follows him back to me it gives me time to get the bear spray ready. Yes that's why I have not bought a hunting license for the last four years because the dog likes to come in the bush with me. so now we bring bear spray and a camera.

Hunting in bear country? Carry a bear spray on your hip and know how to use it. How hard is that? Speedy recovery to this gentleman!

I hope our comrade is back in the saddle soon.
I don't know how I would deal with my next solo trip into the woods, hopefully he has bigger stones than me. By the sounds of it, he does.
