Buy low people and force the others to lower there prices.
Either way you are buying from them. Where do you think the "other" stations get their fuel from.

When the economist and analysts from the big banks start to say we are over paying it is pretty hard to disagree. Collusion or not, the refiners are trying desperately to make back reduced revenues (most aren't suffering losses because their cost to produce is still below the current price) from the crude producing side of their operations by getting higher margins on refining. Most companies would be doing the same thing, you need to make money somewhere.

For those that ONLY refine, and don't produce crude, this is bumper excess profit time and if it is an Alberta refiner they are paying about $25 U.S. for their crude, and that is a hose job.

I think i would rather pay a couple bucks extra to fill up vs see the heavyweights in alberta like imperial, suncor, and shell clamp down on spending like the raw producers have.

Refining is probably saving alot of peoples bacon right now.

That refinery going up in redwater is saving about 3500-5000 peoples jobs right now, refining, petrochemicals is pushing alot of money into the economy despite the raw producers getting slaughtered.

It may cost that 1 particular refinery but the benefits realized by increasing gas prices throughout the continent far outweighs any losses. You still do not explain why a refinery shutdown in NB or Chicago or a potential strike call by works at a refinery in the US raises the price of gasoline in Alberta by anywhere from 5 - 10 cents a liter.
Secondly report by BMO today refutes everything you said "Oil price drop hasn't translated at pumps, BMO research says"
Plain and simple If they can, they will and they do rip off the public whenever they want.
There is a reason for the large mistrust of the oil industry and looking at how they raise the price of gasoline then try to explain their rape of the public is the primary reason for this.
There is a shortage of refineries. Due to the integrated nature of the gasoline commodity market there is a ripple effect across North america.

Refineries set the rake rate based upon commodity index. The going rate. Setting too high means they can't sell it. They know what it is worth. They can also then add in a refiners margin premium.

In this current market companies with both retail and refining are likely taking a higher profit...ie a higher refiners margin.

I don't blame them because they are losing enough money as it is. It is not ripping off anyone. It is an open and hyper competitive free market.

Since this is a free market...downward pressure happens as people shop for the lowest price. Buying gas at Costco, Safeway, coop, superstore will force shell to lower their price to compete.

Mistrust comes from not understanding the facts and thinking emotionally like oil companies should be giving away gas to kind honest smart guys like you and going broke in the process.

Be honest on here. For you to exude severe insults to an industry that they are raping people should be backed up with facts.

Find one integrated oil company that is making an unfair rate of return. Usually I ask for three but because I like you one will suffice.

A company making excessive profits should have a rate of return over 30% by your count I am assuming.

Collusion when they are priced the same, competition when they are priced differently. Same whining either way.

Yup, whether collusion or competition, the public continues to pad the pockets of the oil company stockholders. Nice folks, lay off thousands then make sure those same folks pay more for not only gasoline for private use, but any goods transported by truck, ship, airplane etc. If farmers want to protest, this would be a good cause as the high fuel costs sure affect their bottom line. Nice folks them thar oil perdusers, refiners and reetalers! Oh yeah, in most cases they're one and the same....

The short of refineries was created by the oil companies themselves not you, or me or the government. The closing of refineries was done to ensure that the oil companies would be able to control the supply at the back end because they could no longer control the supply at the front end.

Mistrust comes from being continually ripped off and not having a any choice. We are now only seeing minimal competition in the distribution end. Blind acceptance comes from ignorance. For one who travels throughout North America and seeing gasoline prices in Calgary higher than NB and QUE at times you wonder.

Those are facts.

FFS already. Rip off this. Gouged that. Who is holding a gun to your head? What makes you feel like you deserve something that isn't yours at a price you decide is right?

If someone sets a price on something and you pull out your wallet and buy it, they did not rip you off. Stop your whining.

Government and NIMBY's make building new refineries too risky to invest.

Since you feel they have so much power and rip you off you must be heavily invested. If not then you are making emotional statements...again with absolutely no proof companies are ripping you off. Because if they were you would of produced financial proof the company made too much money. An unfair profit margin.

But hey...you must own a hybrid by now.

Hyper competition still means they are in the business to make a profit.

I just don't get you. You can't show an unfair profit. You seem to want free gas. You seem to think oil companies owe you something. You seem entitled.

Can you think of other companies ripping you off? How about Pepsi Co. Over charging you for bottled water? How about McDonalds Corp over charging for a Big Mac...you know them advertising photos for fast food never look like the real deal. How about the cost of a Flames game or Calgary Stampede entrance fees...or an ITunes song? How about your rent? How about ...?
