The magnums are nice if you really like to shoot long, but I feel the 30-06 is plenty for anything in north america out to at least 300 yards. The aught six would be my preference, just because I started with it and it does the job.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

I'm pretty new to hunting, but I can vouch for the .30-06 in a Model 70 featherweight- I don't feel too limited in regards to what species I could hunt and the fact that ammunition is much cheaper than a lot of the magnum rounds was a huge plus for me. With a scope and full magazine it has to be close to eight pounds, so its heavy enough to soak up recoil (which was admittedly more than I had expected). It feels great to me but everyone is different, try and get a feel for a bunch of different brands and calibre's if you can, maybe there is a gun range close by you that has firearms on hand. Keep dropping by the forum, a lot of wisdom to be gained from these guys!

might could be one to consider

Chuk
yes when I was younger I used the 30-06 extensively
I just really don't like it and cant say a good thing about it
like I said it just me and my personal preference
didn't say it was a bad caliber

For all round versatility I use the 300 win mag, although it is a bit much for deer at closer ranges it is able to take moose out to 1000yards, it'll take pretty much any big game animal at close or long range
