Haha,gulls gotta eat too.
.....as do mink, eagles, ospreys, otters, eels, bears, aquatic bugs, and even stream beds need nutrients to stay healthy.......nothing goes to waste in nature, not unrecovered gut shot elk,not road killed gophers, not even mortally injured released fish.

Well if you release a under sized trout whose gills are bleeding, and floats up to the surface in seconds 2 ft from shore, would you keep or let it stay there? That's maybe why I see dead fish 3 feet from shore always

Again, the regs are clear. All fish that must be released as per the regs, must be released. You may not keep. Ever. Doesn't matter if it's 2 feet, 2 inches, 2 miles from shore. If the fish needed to be released because of the law, and it goes belly up, c'est la vie. As noted in earlier posts, the fish's body will not be wasted, because another animal will grab it or decomposition.
When the regs talk about wasting edible flesh, that's for the idiots who go home with a fish, freeze it and forget about it for 12 months, then throw it out, because of freezer burn, spoilage, or they just don't feel like eating it.
Bad enough to do that with one fish, some jack***es take home limit after limit and waste numerous fish. Should be banned for life from ever fishing again. And I'm no C&R zealot; I'll gladly take home 5 trout from Carson; I - like most of us here - choose to do the responsible, normal, ordinary thing and eat the fish!

If you were allowed to keep an illegal fish because it did not survive there would be a lot of " accidental" fish deaths out there. If you are planing on keeping one or two to eat please keep the legal ones that are not going to make it no matter what size they are.

back too the original topic, as i've not read the entire thread.
can't say anything about the data.
but if you follow the flyfishing mags and videos. you'll notice that it's pretty much the same people that take all the cool shots/clips.
i stop buying the mags and watching the clips, as i've been lucky/unlucky enough to see how they often happen.
from 36" rainbows in alaska, 69" taiman in mongolia, huge sea run browns, steelhead, trout in alberta, ext.
the famous photographers all kill fish trying to get the sweet cover shot.
it's very sad.
changing shirts, hats, doing there hair/makeup. all for the pic.
nothing wrong with the quick pic.
but it does happen, and its sad.

How many fish die? Who knows? I won't make any assumptions beyond the fact that I'm not handy enough with a camera to take pics fast and safely, so I don't try.

Yup it is the law, too many liars out there to let people get away with keeping fish that "died on their own".
I had a trout this year that died in my hands while I was trying to revive it. It was very strange, it was like it was trying to cough out air or something and within a couple minutes it was dead. The fish was under legal size so I had no choice other then to throw it back into the lake... Very frustrating.
Although it may seem like a better idea to keep it and eat it the fines if you are caught doing so are ridiculous.

I'm tired of trying to point fingers at other fishermen and hunters and railing against what they supposedly do, with little or no evidence. Every thread seems to start with someone's unsubstantiated opinion being accepted as fact, and then the piling on begins.

I used to take pictures of the fish I catch, but now I only snap shots of the scenery. The fish I catch are now more for my own memories than to show off to a friend. I'd like to coin a new phrase... Quick release. Meaning hook pulled with the fish remaining in the water.

That's great , in my opinion you should leave wild fish to those who appreciate watching them swim away to be caught again.
I am not against fish pics but this fixation that some have with "fish porn" ( and I hate that term) is getting old. What I have never been able to figure out is this obsession some have with having to "prove" they caught a fish. Are your skills so weak that your friends actually can't believe you caught a fish ? Lol ! It's probably the same folks who find it necessary to include their fish count. Like anyone cares you caught 16 walleye, 12 rainbows and 5 browns in 2014! ridiculous!!!
On a side note, I've fished with some well known fly fishermen who often put fish under WAY too much stress just to get the perfect pic. Often they end up belly up or very stressed, they claim to feel bad about it and then just do it again. Wtf? If your "fish count" is anywhere close to the number of pics on your iPhone please do the fish a favor and stop now. The only one who is impressed is you.

Not cameras so much, but more so social media is to blame for killing fish....there,I said it!!
This need to prove to the World Wide Web of by and large total strangers what an amazing and skilled angler you are.....THAT is what leads to poor choices, mishandled fish, over stressed fish, and dead fish.....all for the self gratifying grip and grin hero shot.
Several of the flyfishing web forums that I frequent have for years now promoted CnR and forbid the posting of dead fish,and/or obviously stressed, mishandled, posed on rocks, grass, sand, mud etc....
More recently,a certain steelhead angling forum that I visit forbids the posting of ANY fish...PERIOD!!Actually,I may be mistaken,it "might" allow pics of obviously dead fish that are legally harvested for the table where permitted, but grip n grins are definitely forbidden, deleted, and repeat offenders swiftly booted.
Now I'm not gonna go so far as to say that ALL "fish porn" should be forbidden, only that you think about the welfare of your catch, handle it properly in the water always, and a good rule of thumb might be "if you are fishing alone,ie;taking fish selfies, chances are you are likely putting that fish thru undue stress, and you probably shouldn't be taking pics at all?
Now I'm sure I'll get flamed for that comment,I really don't GaF....next time you are fishing and taking that hero shot grip n grin selfie, ask yourself,"is this what's best for this fish?" and/or time yourself on how long it takes you to F around to get that pic.On the other hand,if you must insist on photographic evidence of your amazing angling skills, and have a partner on the bank at the ready with camera that can take a quick pic or two as you land, revive, and promptly release said fish.....I guess I don't see anything wrong with that?
Another good option for solo anglers is filming with a GoPro or similar device, then you can post videos for the world to enjoy,or simply edit at home and capture still shots from the raw footage, all without putting the fish thru undue stress or extended release times.

Don, what are the catch and release mortality stats for otters? Realistically they are the worst offenders

Jay...
There is a open season on otters in the Boreal regions of Alberta. In the parkland, foothills, alpine and sub-alpine regions there is no season.
However, otters are caught by beaver sets in the non-boreal areas and they are supposed to be delivered to ESRD.
Otters are just another invasive species.
Mind you, loons, pelicans, cormorants, herons and osprey all benefit from trout stockings. No season on those predators either.
Predators are sacred in Alberta. With few exceptions, only the prey are managed.
Nice troll!!
Don
And bc... Each of those fish were released without ever leaving the water. Nearly no handling as barbless hooks aid release and if you did the same, maybe just maybe your kids may have some fish to catch. Clearly you have some issues with releasing fish. Meet guys like you before. Thankfully getting fewer of you. If we, and that means you as well, don't spend time looking after this provinces resources, there will be none.

Now i have friends that only spinfish and well those hooks mangle and really Damage the smaller trouts mouths! they still seem to swim away i always wonder how long they actualy survive for couse dammm i would hate a treble hook aloooooot more if that where me.
Grinr is right tho social media wrecks everything especialy when you see younger kids fishing with 2 rods each! and bait! in the river system.. And there parents watching speaking another language.. Now that kills trout

What were the control fish subjected to that only 10% of them survived?
Who takes 60 seconds to take a photo? Get your watch out and time 60 seconds and run through the actions of taking a photo of a fish. 10 seconds is excessive for those actions.

I had a cut-throat die in the net. The hook must have hit an artery or something wierd cause it was an easy release (barbless single) and the fish was not even taken out of the water until photo time, lifted it out and it was dead already. No choice but to leave it for the resident sea-eagles.

I get that too Craig once in a while ..I mean I don't even bring them out of the water and 5 minutes later they are floating .. I try to ignore but later take home or put in the fry pan that night as part of my limit .. some will swim away but I know they will not make the night and will be on the bottom some where

Sorry for late reply was out in the woods
They where East indian. Told a warden.. This was last weekend now this weekend on my way back home i stopped in last night THEY where there again this time 5 males 2 older grandpas a lady a baby and a 3 year old... The 3 year old had a whitefish in the bucket as a pet and 5 males 25 to 30ish where using wormsand multiple rods, i snapped a picture of them but came out blurry. So they noticed the picture i think couse they quickly started packing one of the males had a bag and in the outline i could see two 18 inch heavy beasts while smaller outlines on top so they left... I tried to follow but could not catch up to them as they pulled away.... But tonight i drove out to see if they WOULD be there and as i got there 1 of em was in his older SUV so i took a pic of his plate
Im going to call it in the morning
This is all happening at the widdow maker on highway 40 both holes... Widow maker and one below it.. The one below it is where they hide more
Here is the blurry pic of em across the rivrr i tried to make it look like i was snapping of a friend
