Barnes Bullets Revisited

Curious how many others have seen Barnes fail like the post on page one? Seen another failure of the TTSX 150gr out of 308 this year.

All I shoot is 110gr ttsx out of 270win at 3400fps and have had great results on elk,moose,deer, bears for a lot of years now.

I have seen examples for sure, but not nearly as many failures as I have seen with cup and core bullets.
By that I mean literally pieces of bullet taken put of an animal after multiple hits to get it down.
Personally speaking , I have never had a Barnes TSX or TTSX fail as far as not opening a good wound channel.

I switched to the TSX when they first became available, and then the TTSX, when they became available, and I haven't experienced any bullet failing to do it's job. Several friends have also switched over, and again no actual failures. I haven't recovered many of either bullet, because most are pass throughs, out of the 300RUM or 7mmstw. My last kill with the 7mmstw was a pronghorn at 300 yards, and while there was no large exit hole apparent , the buck dropped at the shot, and dressing it revealed considerable internal damage. That is actually pretty typical with the TTSX, small entrance and exit, but considerable damage to the vitals.

Most of my hunting group have switched over to Barnes. No failures. Just spectacular performance and a bunch of dead animals. One of the boys, who did not grow up hunting, wanted to buy his first rifle. He had been using an old 308 loaner for years and now was time. He wanted a 7 Rem, but I convinced him to get a 7-08. Last couple years, he’s dropped an elk and a moose with 120 TTSX. Barnes just work has been our experience.

I have personally never seen a failure. All they’ve done is bust bone and create chaos in a chest cavity.

I use them in my .270 WSM, 140 gr TSX. I have recovered some out of moose and elk, and they have all looked like a pic from an ad. Perfect expansion.

I have some old first gen moly-coated X bullets in 210gr for my .338. Put one through a bull elk's shoulder and just stopped on the hid on the other side. I was surprised that that bull went 150 yards with a destroyed shoulder, but he did. Bullet was perfect, double lung shot. Just a tough animal.

I shoot 130g TSX out of my Husqvarna .270win. 2950fps from the 20" barrel. 2 deer this year had exit wounds. One made is about 35yds, the other dropped on the spot.

To add to this, I got a Yukon moose this fall as well. That was with a 30.06 180gr TTSX. 2850fps with a Sako Hunter. 22" barrel. The TTSX entered just behind the front right leg & went through the top of the heart. It continued back to the rear of the offside ribs where I recovered it between the hide & ribs. 152gr of retained weight. It shed 2 peddles. Shot was about 30yds.

Both deer in the above post were inside of 50yds as well. So I can't give any data on expansion at further ranges. The 2 130gr TSX's that I shot the deer with were not recovered. The deer & the moose had decent damage form the Barnes bullets. Approx 2" x 2" entry wounds. Internals were toast.

I purchased some Barnes TTSX 140 grain for use in my 7mm-08 and ran into problems with finding a powder that would work with the reduced case capacity because of the length of the TTSX. Any recommendations on powder types that work for the 7mm-08 with TTSX's?

Haven't tried the 140's yet, but I run the 120 ttsx's with 42.5 gr of varget and there's still room in the case.
I also load 139 gr. SST's with 40 gr. varget and still have room in the case. The sst's are a tad shorter than the ttsx's though..
Neither loads are max loads..

I have two 7-08 rifles. I can get 48.0 gr W760 under a 139 GMX or 140 TTSX in Hornady brass for my Tikka and load 45.0 Varget under 120 TTSX in Nosler brass for my early 2013 Model 20B Forbes. Both regularly shoot .6” three shot groups. These are max loads, YMMV.

Thanks for the info! Might try the 120 Grain since it seems that alot of hunters are going on the lighter side with the Barnes. I guess the added velocity is advantageous with them.
