This one ranks, in my mind, as one of the "greatest ever" covers:

Grateful Dead, "Morning Dew":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77AucJXkeLA

Not the same level, but a couple of "pretty good" covers:

Brandi Carlile, "Folsom Prison Blues":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fdHLt7-xsg

Dolly Parton, "Shine":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I1og34GG8o

I can also say that one of the finest performances I've ever witnessed was Storm Large (fronting Flower SF) singing -- of all things -- "The Little Drummer Boy" at the I-Beam in San Francisco. Mind-blowing.

I forgot, best ever is Gin and Juice by the Gourds, totally unique take on a Snoop Dogg classic. You can't not smile when you listen to it!

I'm not a huge Pink fan but her cover of Me and Bobby McGee is pretty damn good.

I've got a whole playlist of good and interesting covers on my ipod....a couple of my favorites:

Rivethead doing 'Run Like Hell' (Pink Floyd)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTsPM6fO_2w

...and also doing 'Sexy Back', a song I hated until I heard their version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk0V7n9Q8f0

And perhaps the most interesting, a cover of a song I didn't think could be covered, 'Tom Sawyer' as done by Deadsy:

A few good ones from Nirvana Unplugged including Man Who Sold the World and Where did you sleep last night. The absolute pain in Kurt's voice at the end of the later is haunting.

Was going to add captain tractor's London calling, couldn't find a good video

Someone mentioned gin&juice by the gourds; that was a good one.

For those of you who want something different, a guy named Dan Henig has a cover of the new macklemore song thrift shop that's pretty decent. Actually gets in your head pretty good for a guy with a guitar and a mic. Won't post the link due to lyrics.

But this one is well produced, give it a try http://youtu.be/vsvlsuLau5c

Great tune! I grew up hearing the Cream version, so that's the one I prefer, though I like the way Rush sped it up a little

When the original artists give you a standing ovation you've probably done something right.

I prefer the Ignite version of this song ( on the right). A little more upbeat tempo.

A few of my fav covers are Johnny Cash's version of Hurt by NIN or his version of Tom Petty's Won't Back Down

Default Shatner

Just about anything William Shatner covers is gold (in its own way), but his version of Pulp's "Common People" is awesome.

(That's Joe Jackson singing the choruses.)
