This is true, and I have a decent load made up for the 300wsm but..... I have two boys, I'm going to need enough rifles to go around!

I would go for the .260 great ballistics and bullet selection will do just what your asking of it and also a great low recoil cartridge for your boys.

Like you say....you already have the heavy gun to use on any NA big game. Why would you want another magnum? Go 25.06, 7mm08, 270. No magnums.

Get the 7mm, it will probably end up being your favourite and the one you keep for yourself. It has plenty of power for anything in NA, and very reasonable recoil.

Good Choice ! Now, If you can find some Nosler 150 gr LR Accubonds for that .270 WSM methinks you would really be cookin'. The super high BC provides some new potential for that cartridge.

It's that time once again, the lull between seasons and the need for a new rifle is upon me. I have my rifle picked out, now I'm just pondering which cartridge to get. I'd like an all round cartridger, mostly for Deer but will have to be able to take down an Elk or Moose at 350-400yds. I have a 300wsm if I go out specifically for Elk or Moose, so I'd like something a bit smaller.
Here's what I was thinking, 7mm mag, 270wsm, maybe a 25-06 or even a something as small as a 7mm-08. I don't have any hunting experience with any of these cartridges so I am hoping for some input as to which one would be best. I'm a fan of flat shooters and .284 cals. I've never owned a 270 before but I'm open to trying one out.
What's your opinion on a great all round cartridge?
|
The list of cartriges/calibres not adequate for deer. elk or moose at those distances would be far shorter.
Just about anything not specifically intended for yotes or lobing in slow bullets will fit the bill nicely.
Like Cat said... the shooter makes more of a difference than what he is shooting.

Why go with a magnum? you already have a 300wsm. all rounder mostly for deer - you don't need a mag for that. if you like the 7's then go with a 7mm-08, or 6.5x55 swede for the extra cool factor.

Ya, after hummin and hawin I made up my mind. I've got the 300wsm, a 280 rem, a 308, a 7mm-08, 243, a 30-30, and a 223 so I went with a Sako Finnlight in 260 rem topped with a Leupold VX-6 2-12x42 with a #4 fire dot reticle. It should be in within 3 weeks, can't wait!!!
I'll be looking for 260 loads and bullet choices soon, if anybody has so advice, I'd love to hear it.
