Good points. Sometimes you might not know though, such as in the case you get blindsided. The bear biologist I talk to occasionally has told me err on the side of statistics. According to him, grizzly are generally attacking defensively, either because you're in their space or they have cubs around. Black bears are the ones with more predatory tendencies, yet are also more put off by prey that aggressively fights back.
