I've also lived in major US cities and yeah, it can be rough. But Canadian big cities are rough too.
I think many of the people (not all) who wring their hands and complain about the USA and guns etc. have never really spent quality time with the people there. It's just popular (and easy) to say, "I'm so thankful we are not like the USA..."

100%. Between working in the US and just visiting there, Americans are great people (with that being said I have not spent any amount of time in big cities). I find them to be far more polite than up here. Canadians being so nice/polite is a misnomer in my opinion.
