I just finished a very interesting book about a trapper who also worked for the Alaska gov't controlling predators and collecting specimens circa 1915-1950.
He shot more moose, caribou, grizzlies and wolves than most people will ever see in magazines, national parks and in the wild - combined. His experience included some very close calls with big bears. In talking about it, he recounted that he'd shot about 85 moose in his lifetime, with calibers from .22 Hi-Power Savage to a .405. (Fur was very valuable in the early 20th century and he was a gun nut like a lot of us who bought every new gun that came down the pike.)
Anyway, he never saw the need for more than a .30-06 with 180 gr. bullets. A lot of big game was shot with smaller calibers. He was particularly fond of neck and brain shots, however, and I would not recommend that for the vast majority of hunters nowadays.
At one point, when he was hired to collect grizzly specimens for the U.S. Gov't. One day, he killed 6 grizzlies with 6 shots - from a .30-06.
Shot placement was everything, Frank Glaser said. So say most of us, I expect.

If you can't shoot it good any caliber is the worst. My vote for worst goes to anything less than 270

the one caliber Ive had and had absolutely no confidence in was th 264 win mag, for my style of hunting and the area i hunted in at the time, i found i to kick excessively and used way to much powder , got the same results as a 270 or less, it didn't perform well even with well placed shots on bear and deer I know i will never have another one in my gun cabinet, and the 375 Winchester is not all its cracked up to be either

How about .25 ACP ? Think it meets the legal criteria for Alberta.

most likely guys that burn through a box of 300win mag "shells" in a season in order to close 2 or 3 tags.

There are exceptions, for sure, but with today's fast smokeless stuff it's hard to put a "worst " on anything - the 25/20 is in there however!!

While I was sitting in my blind a couple weeks back, I heard a guy fire an absolute Howitzer four times in quick succession in the next lot over. Evidently some guys are firing calibres that are too big for them to handle.

I don't think I'd take my 300Rook out for deer any time soon either. I could use 32 Long Colt in it, but, naaaah!!

A lot of guys think you don't have a real gun unles the recoil gives you a concussion. Why, I have no idea.

Anything that gives more than about 25lb/ft recoil for the average shooter/hunter.
That puts the 30'06 at the top of the good calibers.

Same thing. I used to like calibres that were big and loud. Now I like my calibres under 30, fast, lean with big scopes.

Many years ago an 8 year old kid missed a bull moose right beside him with a 30-30, I've hated them since. A 30-06 I can carry all fall and not see anything to shoot at.

Anything that ends in "Weatherby"....
Most (not all) people packing these rifles are not comfortable shooting them, IMO.
Oh, and Fishnafterwork, the 4 elk, 1 moose and 20'ish deer I have killed with the .270 have all died with less fuss then some bigger calibres. With the bullets available today I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anything in North America with a .270, even the big bears.

I vote .300 magnum anything. Not because there is anything wrong with the cartridge but because it seems to be the preffered cartridge of absolute tools. The type of guys that think that shooting one of these proves somthing, when you ask them what they shoot their chest puffs out a little bit and as they proudly anounce to the world the absolute proof of their verility, their voice drops a couple octaves when the get to the word MAGNUM.

I have a friend that his killed hundreds of head of big game around the world. He will tell you that he considers the 338 Win Mag up there with the worst.

I'll play
I would never own a 30-06, it's what you buy when you don't know what you want and/or someone on a gun counter wants to sell ya something.
Toss the 243 308 270 and 300 win mag on there too. Probably the 5 most popoular cartridges but to vanilla for me.

define experienced please,
my daughter has filled her tags every year for 10years now with a 270 or a 308, and so have thousands of other hunters useing a 270 or 308,
as for a 30-06 it kills at one end wounds at the other, you pick which end does which
