I had tied up size 4 7x, with a trailer. It was a very big fly that was supposed to pull in some huge walleye from the peg, but all I got was drum. So I kept on fishing for drum.
They fight well in the bigger size.

Yeah I have heard of the otolith. I know with salmon you need to cut it out and use a microscope to see the small rings on the statoconium. Oh jeez man, I can't wait to see some pictures of those guys!

No I haven't. It is good stuff? I love the synthetic hair out there these days.
I wanted to make some Great Lakes Shiners the other month, but I couldn't find any ghost hair, so I bought the DNA fibre and fell in love with it haha. Still looking for ghost hair though.

I have some dyed grey ghost polar bear fur....need any?
Yeah craft fur is an ok alternative to fox tail. Sheds water quite well, as it's a synthetic material.
I recently got a new iphone, and i think the drum are on the old blackberry. Gonna have a look and post them up.

Nice!
Would that be a loch fly or would you use this as a wet river fly?

Both streams and lakes, Brook Trout love them. I started my tying career with winged wets in the early 60"s, I'm now returning to a great many of these classic patterns.

Started tying these a couple years back...olive is the only color I tie them in. They are absolutely deadly and are my go to pattern on lakes in #8...

Very nice blood worm John. Cheese wrapper. Who would have thunk it? Not me that's for sure. But you can bet I will be saving a few now.

Was out on the bow this past Monday and hit a rainbow, a brown, and a white all on pheasant tail nymphs. So I decided to try to tie a couple up while I am out of town at work. Was able to get 3 tied last night. I am just started to tie, maybe tied a total of 6 flies before these and they were definitely not picture worthy.
Here's what I put together. Hopefully the pictures work, first time posting pictures. Any and all advice or tips welcome.

Decided to look into this forum after a few years and seen there was a fly fishing section. Some great patterns, love the blue charms.
Here's a pattern I use for bulls, probably sees more water out of any of the other patterns I use.

How does that cone affect the sinking rate?

Thanks.
It's Ice Fur with some Ice wing and krystal flash mixed in.
I don't find the magic head to have much effect on the sink rate. Not that I notice on the patterns I've used it on. Gives the fly some action, here a link on youtube showing how it makes the fly move.

I've used the cones on streamers when fishing maligne lake... Pretty deadly, but I rarely use them because I find its too close to fishing a rap on the end of your fly rod.

Have you ever fished a rapala on a fly rod?
Am I the only one that has?

Hehe, I won't lie...I have!!
That cone looks like it might make knot tying a little challenging.

the way i put them on, instead of tying directly onto the hook, leave the cone seperate. Thread the leader through the hole of the cone, and tie a clinch knot to the eye of the hook, then slide the cone back down, over top of the knot! Gives a bugger or streamer great wobble! Its saved a skunking up on maligne a couple times.

I've fished very small spinners and spoons on my fly rod a LONG time ago. Never again.
