Don’t think, don’t try........yeah, nah.
How can you tell people that they are going to lose 18% at auction with a straight face and feel good about it. It’s absolutely ridiculous. That’s what’s commonly known as fleecing the sheep. I don’t know what’s going to happen at auction, although I have a pretty good idea, but I know that i’m Not going to lose 18% in auction fees

Marty and Dave you should take your show on the road, maybe even to the rendezvous. I haven’t laughed so hard since the last time I watched an Abbot and Constello movie. By the way which one of you is on first.

People did do $155 averages at NAFA last year at the sale of the century! Some people.
Funny how crazy things have gone in the country on the coyotes.
If anyone balks at the 18% fees do note
- 11% commission
- 5% loss for CDN trappers on exchange rate USD to CDN $$$
- $2 drumming fee per coyote
- Nominal shipping charge from depot to North Bay
These are just the facts, im not badmouthing them . FHA cant sell your fur for free. Levels shown as a fair comparison.
To be sure tho, is the $2 drumming accurate or is it less?
|
FAKE NEWS........BEWARE!!! The figures in the quoted post above are FALSE and misrepresent the actual fees.
Marty, you should be ashamed of yourself.
This should put an end to any questions about the FHA auction fees.
From FHA:
"Hi Dave,
I was asked to respond to your email.
The cost associated with selling through FHA are the following:
11% commission
$1.00 per coyote drumming charge
$12.00 dollars shipping (one time fee per sale no matter how many bags you ship)
The conversion from USD to CAN dollars is based on the exchange rate given to us by the bank during the week of the sale.
If you are concerned about the exchange rate you can ask to have your check issued in USD and take your chance at the bank.
If you have further concerns please let me know.

Still doesn’t state what the rate will be vs bank exchange rate.
I believe I was slightly off at 5%, my deepest apologies... here is a thread that basically states that FHA exchange rate was 2% more than NAFA’s
http://www.trapper.ca/cnta/viewtopic...e+rate#p133784
So then 4% not 5%? How does that sound Dave? Or do you still not understand the loss at the point of exchange?

Dude, did you just post a link to a thread where you stated not only once, but three times, that the exchange rate is 2%?
“Jim, would you believe me if I told you I'd much rather keep my money in my pocket? I would rather keep the extra 2%
I would rather see FHA give the trapper that extra 2% and then charge the buyers more packing and handling charges and/or up the buyers commission.”
And,
“Regardless, it will make me, a simple and ignorant trapper, much happier when I get the 2%”
So, I guess it’s 2% when you’re selling but hey, why not, 5% when you’re buying.
You’re busted. I’d suggest that you stop digging a deeper hole.
BTW, it’s 1.02% exchange rate, not 2%.

Oops, my bad. I should have said 7% not 5%. 18% minus 11% equals 7% right? I guess that I’m not good with math after all.

I guess you didn't understand the hypothetical question there. That doesnt surprise me. The OP asks if NAFA should up its exchange rate fee to FHA level and i say keep it in the trappers pocket.

So what ever happened? What was the verdict? Should have waited to ship My coyotes to auction?

A little quiet..... on the subject. I sent some in and sold most privately. Still waiting for my cheque’s for my lower end coyotes that sold. Think I would have done better selling all my coyotes privately this year.

If your priority was getting paid quickly you definitely made the right decision to sell at a discount.
I don’t think that selling at a 50% discount on lower grade coyotes and castor to a buyer is that great though.
My only regret is not taking my first batch of best December Yotes to my buyer before sending them to auction. He got got the best of my second batch.
Next season.......Best coyotes to my buyer and muskrat, beaver and lower grading coyotes to auction. Might as well sell my fox whole.

I only sold My fox and Coyotes to buyer. Beavers, Muskrats, Otter, Fisher, Weasel, Mink, Squirrel, all went to auction. I am sitting on 50 lbs of castor.
Just sold 5lbs to a buyer in Ontario, waiting to see how smooth that transaction goes, them may be shipping another 50-55 lbs there. If not the go to FHA in June.

Have you shipped castor to FHA before? I was surprised how much they took off for shrinkage.

But please do investigate. I am basing my understanding simply on hearsay. Trapper Bob*** sez FHA exchanged at 1.36
Google search shows late March exchange rate at 1.40
Please Davey? Pretty please?
I sure asked nice eh?

I believe if the coyote market “crashes” groeny will still be in Canada because if we as trappers do our job to control the coyote population there’ll still be great western Canada fur to be bought. A 70$ coyote that was once a 140$ coyote still looks the same in the field or in the trap and trapping is about wildlife management and the hi prices for coyotes were a bonus.
My point is even if prices tank and we still trap em they will buy.
No doubt there’ll b the guys that quit because they liked the payday that went with it (I know I have picked up equipment recently from a few) but that just means more fur running around for the rest of us.
Just my opinion.

What else is there to do?
But next year is a new year. I think GFW likes buying in Canada, they will go evaluate what they did up here and undoubtedly formulate a game plan for next season. Were they happy with the goods? Were they happy with their buyers? Did they make any money? These answers will dictate their future decisions.
Maybe other factors, who knows what can happen in the next half year.
