I have a 420 with auto/electronic shift transmission. I love the bike but would never buy another without a manual transmission. The auto has a difficult time finding the right gear, especially low. It lugs bad when under strain and then jumps hard into the lower gear, which is a little unsettling when you are climbing a steep hill. Also upshifts seem to be delayed past the point where I would manually upshift.
The electronic push button option gets stuck between gears when downshifting from time to time, especially when its hot after being run hard. Its a pain to get it unstuck. Also no lights on the shifter buttons making them a little hard to find in the dark sometimes if you need a quick downshift.
Get a manual transmission, they just work.

I've got a 08 kingquad 450 that has been great and reliable after lots of miles. Regardless of all the brand loyalty stuff Suzuki quads have a good reputation overall. I agree with the 3-4k range. In this market likely closer to 4k if he were to post in the open market. I expect you could still get a lot of years out of that machine assuming its been stored well.

If the Suzuki is in good shape, I wouldn't think twice. For some reason they don't demand the premium resale that Honda/Yamaha, but Suzuki/Kawasaki have made some very good ATV's over the years, with a good track record for reliability.
The first "quad" that I rode was a Suzuki 125 when they first came out around 1982/1983. It was a pretty big deal when all of the other manufacturers still only made three wheelers.

I bought a 2013 Honda rancher 420 manual shift this summer. My first liquid cool bike. Spent $4100. It had 150 hrs. Good purchases can be found. Definitely would try to get it sub 4K.

I've rode Suzuki's for years with no problems, sounds like a good deal if you can get it for 3000 - 4000. If it was a grampa run quad chances are it wasn't abused.

I went yesterday to look at the quad and the guy is asking 5 1/2 for it. The quad is in the real good condition but I think I will go for Honda.

He will probably get it or close given the Covid pricing these days, but at that price I would do the same as you and go brand new. Moving up 16 years in age and ordering exactly what you want makes a lot of sense.

Reliability wise I think all the major makes are quite close. Everyone will have their good and bad stories. And the auto clutches are way more reliable than when they first came out. It's kinda Just like Ford VS Chevy VS Dodge. I had a Brute Force 650. Bought new in 07, was great. Sold it two years ago.
My only two bits is I would not go without Power Steering again. Not after riding machines with it back to back. Ever.

From experience, the Yamaha Grizzly is a very good machine. I hear good things about the Honda, but have never owned one.

Biased Honda guy here. Picked up a used 2006 Suzuki 700 King Quad last spring. Rides nice, plenty of power. However big issue with injector, starter, to keeping it running. Once hot it stalls, and won’t restart. Thinking it needs a bore (120psi), Piston/rings. Frustrating, it’s nice ATV. I would like to enjoy it, as I do my Honda.

Honda or Yamaha is the way to go. Honda is a bullet proof machine. Wouldnt go any higher than $4000 for the suzuki.

^ Haha. All in good fun.
In seriousness, if I were looking for a quad, I doubt I would be looking at any other than Honda, new or used. Unless a used one was a screaming deal, perhaps.

My advice if you want one start looking now. The 420 rancher Manual is a bullet proof beast. My 2011 has about 9500k on it from 2 teenage sons mostly and it has been abused hard and still going strong. The first gear is a towing machine and no problem towing any moose or elk.
