It always amazes me when someone is looking for useful info especially on a good question like the 1 posed here, on ANY forum, the 1st thing that is bantied about is the superior caliber B.S. or the "best rifle" according to the poster.
I guess getting older I may be getting a bit more crusty and less tolerant of expert advice that has no merit. It was NOT my intent to inflame anyone and apologise if anyone took my comments wrong.

By the way 200 rounds of 50 cal ammo is $3000.00 so cheap Dad is more like "broke Dad"

Yeah, agreed, the "this caliber vs. that caliber" gets old after awhile. It's in our nature though to argue about such things. Ford, Chevy, Mopar...

I figured as much re: the cost of 50 cal ammo. Kids are hard to please.

One of our Youth Members in our F&G club uses a 30-06 with repressed loads and does fine. She is petite and is a successful huntress. I am gearing up for my 12 yr old daughter's first hunt this fall with a 243. I have had her shooting my .223 with no problems and I am trying to work her up. She is 98 lbs and 5 feet. I use a Winchester Ranger 30-06 with handloaded Nosler partitiion 165 gr and have no problems putting down moose. An all round cheap rifle (Paid $400,00 for it and the 4 X 9 Bushnell scope) and very universal. Ammunition is reasonable and plenty. Probably, as was mentioned before, most important would be having it fit the shooter. By the way, where is your partner taking her courses? Through AHEIA or did she go to their course of Women In The Outdoors Program this summer in August.

Excessive recoil is still recoil no matter how well the stock fits. Sure, a poorly fitted stock will make matters worse, but I don't care how well fitted say a Tikka T3 in .338WM fits you, it's still not going to be a 98 lb girl's best friend, especially one who is a newcomer to the shooting sports. ATR's 16 year old daughter has had a lot of exposure to firearms by the sound of it, and I'm sure that the .50BMG tips the scale at something more that 6.5 lbs too. So his daughter is not representative of the large percentage of little ladies out there.

I'll go along with all of those that have suggested a 7mm-08 as a great choice, in a properly fitted rifle of course.

Like most people said, rifle fit is very important. There is also the sensitivity to recoil. Sounds like your girlfriend is pretty small so make something like a 7-08 would be good. Not sure how much you want to spend but there is a really sweet used stailness syn 7-08 Sako 85 at WSS in calgary right now. Picked it up yesterday to look at it. Nice and light, it feels really nice to me. Just wish I had a need for that calibre. Probably good it wasnt in a calibre I want right now, or else it would have came home with me.

I agree, a 338 may be a poor choice, my point was that fit is AS important as caliber selection.
7mm08 is a good choice in either a fiberglass stocked, or wood stocked rifle, both of which can be altered, the tupperware stocks are nearly impossible to alter, and give you every bit of recoil you paid for. Other good choices could be , 260, or 308

Just to clarify the 50 my daughter shoots weighs 78 lbs, she can not lift the rifle, but has no problem running up an ammo bill.
Recoil from this rifle is about the same as 12 ga 2 3/4 skeet loads

78lbs...ghesh..do you have to tow it out to the range before you shoot it?

Ahhh, yes, I forgot the good old .308. Very capable caliber for the little lady or anyone for that matter. And how about it in a CZ550 American or Ruger M77.
