It's not a squaw. Caught plenty of these Northern Pike Minnows, I think the technical name is Pickeral. Took Dad and his 3 & 5 yr old sons that were staying in the next cabin to me down to the dock and the boys had a blast. But seriously I have no idea what the fish in the original photo is. I want to add it to my list of caught species but I can't find any info on cutthroat perch. Could it be a trout-perch as listed in the regs as a "baitfish"?

Are you confirming that's what it is? No non-native fish have been introduced in that lake (to my knowledge).

Well this one's a squaw but a moonshine eye in a 350 foot deep mountain lake at an elevation of 1350 metres in central interior BC? I don't know, that's why I ask.

Googled it. Could be with spawning colours. Not 100% convinced yet but I see they are native to California and western north america as well as europe.

ok then how about a redsided shiner?

is this the only picture you have? it is tough to make out a lot of features that would be really helpful for ID like it's mouth.

Its a lake Chub. The ones out east have a darker lateral line these ones dont. Orange behind its gill and the tail fork tells me thats what it is.

Hmm, I've caught a lot of lake chub before and these look nothing like lake chub.... And remember these fish were caught in BC, so the "fishes of alberta" book wont assist us

Edit: I did a bit of research just now and found out that the mystery fish is....... Drum roll!

Caught many of these when I was a kid while fishing for squaw and carp in the channel between Shuswap and Mara Lakes. The local fish guru Mr. Chadwick always called them Peamouth's. That's what they will be forever called by me.
Local name for lakers out there is "greys" and rainbows are "Kamloops" and "squaws" will never ever be northern pike minnows.

yes that was my suggestion several posts ago...6 inches is a huge red sided shiner though, but like a lot of shiners, i imagine they hybridize quite a bit...
