Best ways to secure vehicles while traveling
Need some advise on the best way to secure your truck and boat from being stolen as you travel long distances while staying in hotels. Will be traveling across Canada. Hope someone has done this and has some suggestions.

Wheel boots, may be a pain to put on and take off but you cant drive away. Spend the money on a good car alarm with touchy sensors.

These can be found at performance shops; race cars usually have them for safety in the event of an emergency/crash. Just make sure the thing is rated for the amperage/load it will be subjected to. You can hide them pretty near anywhere.
Try to request a room near where you're parking if the option is available. I know a few cops who use those big highly visible steering wheel locks; apparrently they must dissuade most thieves (from your truck at least). Also find a full coverage lock for your trailer hitch coupler, something not defeated with bolt cutters or a hammer. The more time it takes you to secure your rig, the longer it would take a bad guy to defeat the security. They're lazy and want fast scores, so park next to a guy with a nicer boat & truck that's not as well locked up

If you can, park under a lightpost in the parking lot. Somewhere open without much cover for thieves to work on the unit. Remove as much as you can from the boat so that nothing is a quick grip for thieves.
X2 on high visibility deterents. Nothing says "Find something easier to steal" better than a bright orange "Club" on the steering wheel, and a big lock covering the hitch.
You could also find some decals for the rear window or bumper stickers along the lines of:
"Guns don't kill people.I kill people."
"Shoot 1st,ask questions later"
"Hug A Kickboxer"
I am actually serious about the decals and bumper stickers. If some clown reads one of them and decides that he doesn't want some angry hillbilly or martial arts guy curbing him for trying to steal his stuff, then they've worked.

I've had 2 vans stolen from the office in the last year. Since then the locks have been popped, the stearing columns disassembled and ignitions cranked but the vans are still there- that's cause at night, I get the boys to pull the ignition fuses.

Lots of good ideas already in here. You may also want to look into a hitch pin lock to keep the boat trailer locked to the truck. Not terribly expensive and you can get them from Princess Auto.
Wheel lock (boot) for the trailer and/or truck would also be a very good and very visible deterrent.

Never did it with a truck and boat but did it with a Harley in all ten provinces and 23 states.
..avoid downtown areas.
..ask if they have safe parking.
..if possible stay at a place that has someone in the office 24hrs a day and park where they can keep an eye on your rig. $10 tip works wonders for someone who is making minimum wage.
..and finally...make sure your insurance is paid up to date...lol

I try and find a place I can back in to that blocks the trailer from being moved without moving the truck. There is usually a retaining wall or compound in the lot I can back up against so it's harder to get the trailer out if they try. All pins on my trailer hitch have locks.

lots of good ideas so far. Personally as a deputy when I'm on duty I patrol hotel and motel parking lots. I know how choked I'd be if someone jacked my stuff when I was on a trip so I try my best to prevent it by making my rounds.
As far as YOU The battery disconnect is a great one, put it up in the wheel well or bumper and it cuts all power to the vehicle. Make sure you get one of those round locks that can't be cut by bolt cutters for the hitch on the trailer itself, and then a lock for the pin that holds the ball and toung into the hitch on the truck itself. Then park in a well lit area with fewer vehicles around. Less concealment does wonders, and I like the idea mentioned by NoKlu about backing in next to a retaining wall ect..

Alot of guys put a hidden switch on the fuel pump, that way you don't have to reprogram everything if you put a kill switch on the battery. And usually the wires run inside the truck along the trans tunnel.

Not a fan of the battery disconnect
JB AOL has it right. Disconnecting power to the battery doesnt do wonders for the computer and the fuel mileage. If has to reprogram itself everytime.
kidd

I've done many security disconnects for clients that have "targeted vehicles"..the easiest has been mention above "the battery disconnect" but you can install a simple switch deal, hidden in the vehicle only known to you, that will kill the feed to the ECM. Just remember where the switch is!!
