Default 30/06 vs 270

Well not quite, but almost as bad...

I'm looking for thoughts on the 257 Weatherby and the 264 win mag

Though I'm sure the .270 fans will chime in, I know what the .270 can do and how little it gives up to the 264 win mag...if any.

So whose shooting them and what are your thoughts...

I know both have cult following and people who swear by them...

However my personal feeling is that they are both too overbored, need long barrels and burn powder too inefficiently for my tastes. Power to those that like them, the .257 seems to be well loved by some and many folks over the year, like Boddington, have sung the praises of the .264.

For my money I would rather go with a 6.5-06 which would be right on the heels of the .264...in fact I would rather have the 'new' 6.5x65RWS (basically a Euro 6.5-06 in that it is the 7x64 necked down to 6.5mm). Brass for the 6.5-06 would be easy to make and cheaper than the .257 I am sure.

However if it must be one of those I say .264 WM. If you want to be a complete eccentric then a 6.5x68 will certainly have cache but its probably the most over - bored fire belching beast of the lot!

Default Choices

Well I have a 257 weatherby and I know a couple of other guys that shoot them. Every one of them is capable of shooting 3/8" groups or less. I have not had the luxury of firing a 264. The 6.5mm projectiles have an awesome B.C. What are your intentions for this rifle? Hunting or long range target shooting? The 264 is known as a barrel burner however it is less overbore than the 257 so for target shooting the 264 barrel should last longer. If it is for hunting I'm sure with reasonable timing between shots either one should last you a lifetime.

Good luck with your choice.....I'm sure you will be happy with either one!

This would be a hunting rifle...

I'm not worried about barrel burn, but the 26 inch barrel on the 264 has me hesitant.

What two rifles are you considering? The weatherby mark v rifles also have a 26 inch barrel.

As stated, both require a 26 inch barrel to get the most out of their casing.
I have both a 257 and a couple 264's and I don't find much of a difference in preformance between the two. However I do like the availability of heavier bullets available for the 264 giving you that little extra down range energy. And factory ammo for the 264 is alot cheaper than the 257.
