Default Heavy Barrell 22-250

Hey guys...im looking at buying a savage model 11 22-250. This paticular model doesnt have a heavy barrell though. Should I be concerned about this? The guns primary use will be for coytoes this winter so I shouldnt be throwing rounds through it like crazy which makes me think a lighter barrell will be ok. Let me know what you think

Thanks Again

It's a lot easier swinging a light barrel on running coyotes.

I prefer heavier barreled varmint guns, but for coyote hunting,a sporter weight barrel will work just fine.

I like the heavy barrel on a bipod. It;s easier to settle the crosshairs and less recoil

should be fine for hunting the only big advantage to a heavy bull barrel is that it takes a lot of shooting to heat up the barrel before it starts to change your point of impact. when you sight in your rifle just make sure that your barrel is cool to the touch, between shots.warm to hot barrels but bullets all over a paper target.

You will like packing the light barreled one through three feet of snow a lot better than the heavy barrel version. You rarely shoot more than two or three rounds in a row at coyotes so the light barrel is the way to go in my opinion.

Default Heavy vs light barrel

The more I shoot heavy barrel rifles the harder I find it is to shoot light barrel rifles. The heavy barrel rifle just settles down faster and better. Of course its easier to pack a light rifle but how much do you hate missing? For my money I will pack that extra pound around. Far better to lose a few pounds off your own possibly/probably slightly too round carcass!

X2

That's exactly why I use a medium-heavy barrel. with a wood stock.

That's why tactical rifles are 15 lbs. crosshairs aren;t so jumpy and sometimes you can spot your shots.

I agree with Dean. I was looking at the rifle the other day and i noticed that even with a light barrell the caliber is so small that the barrell looks heavy anyways so im sure it will be fine with a light barrell. Thanks for the inout guys

I would not buy a varmint gun that I was shooting any distance or volume with unless it was a heavy barrel.
