Default October 2/2010 Alberta Whitetail Buck

Saturday eveing as I was arriving where I was to hunt I noticed Mulie does already in the field, and on the road. Instead of disturbing them, I figured a change of pace was in order and carried on to a treestand I placed a few years back. Never touched it last year, but i did shoot a 'yote from it 2 years ago. After getting suited up, and a 1 mile walked to the stand, crawled in a prepared for the 60 minute hunt ahead. This area is near a military base, so as is sat, I watched a few f-18s and some helicopters got through some training excercises. With about 10 minutes of legal light left, I figured it was to warm for deer to be headed out, and being tired from all the early mornings I would head back to the truck. I had just hooked up my bow to the haul line and was ready to lower it down when i heard something walking along the bushline through the wheat field below. I look to my left and see a whitetail approaching. Quickly and with as little movement possible I unhook my bow. As the deer gets clsoer i see the antlers above its head, and realize this is a nice deer. Now with the deer 8 yards ahead of me and 15 feet below, I slowly unquiver and knock an arrow. The whole time the deer was stopped and looking away and into the field. I came to full draw, settled, and squeezed. The arrow cut through the right lung down and forward, taking out the bottom the heart, and hitting the far side leg. The buck jumped, took 2 steps, tripped, got up and ran. He piled up about 60 yards on the edge of the field.

Up on reaching him, I realized he was a 6x5. His main beams are 26" and 27", with an 18.5" inside spread.

Gorgeous. Looks like the buck I missed in Stathcona about a week ago. I hate when arrows go underneath the animals
