Default Leupold B&C Reticle vs. Varmint Hunter Reticle

I'm going to purchase either a new Leupold VX3 4.5-14x50 or 6.5-20x50 scope for my new T/C ProHunter .204, but I haven't decided if i should get the B&C or the Varmint Hunter reticle. Do you think I could use the B&C reticle for hunting coyotes and gophers, or would the reticle lines be too thick for this type of hunting, particularly for long range shots?

Incidentally, the reason I'm considering the B&C reticle for varmint hunting is because I thought then I could use this scope on a high powered rifle in the future (i.e. then I wouldn't have to buy a new scope) and because it may be easier to sell (if I have to) with the B&C reticle as opposed to the Varmint Hunter reticle.

Any thoughts?

I've got the VX-3 3.5-10 x 40mm with the B&C reticle. They're pretty fine lines, not as small as varmint reticle but for sure ok for coyote. Don't know about long range gophers. Best bet is to look at both side by each. I really like the B&C ret.

The Varmint Hunter reticle will best match the trajectory of the 204 Ruger with Hornady 32 & 40 V-Max Bullets. You will probably be able to use the 6.5-20 at 20 power. The 204 shoots too flat for the B&C reticle.

I recommend the varmint as well. In fact I use them in the 6x20s for varmint and in a 4x14 n my 7RUM for long distance antelope, deer etc. The fine reticle is no draw back on big game, but the thick B&C reticle is a problem on small targets, or even mid size at long distance. Even an antelope at 700 yards is a pretty small target, even on 14 power, so the fine reticle is nice for that too as it makes it easier to tell eactly where you are holding. I have actually been thing of mounting one of the 6x20s on the RUM so I have more magnifiacation at long distance.

Default Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. I went down to P&D today and picked up a VX3 4.5-14x50 LR with the Varmint Hunter reticle. It's already mounted and ready for the range (as soon as I get a new centerfire rifle fore stock ).
