Default I'm thinking this is a good deal....you?

I finally turned my bro into a gun nut. So he's decided to hunt with me and retained my services to help him find a good hunting rig. His internet research convinced him to get a 30-06, and I can't argue with that. So, I found a Ruger M77 Mk2 with Ruger rings and a Leupold VX2 3-9x40. the rig is in mint condition and has very low round count. $750.00 for the package. What does the esteemed membership think?

If it's a VX2 I'd say its a great deal, if it's a Vari-X II, I'd say it's a reasonable deal if thats what he's looking for. I'd say 550 for the rifle, and maybe 275 on the scope if you broke it down. If I'm thinking of the right model, I believe it is a non adjustable trigger, and those triggers weren't great. Is it a wood/blued unit, or synthetic/stainless, mostly just curious I never liked the synthetic stocks that were kind of hollowed out looking at the back. I've never done alot of shooting with the ruger centerfires, but I think they all shot decent and are a good value in hunting rifles.

Good luck.

It's a VXII. I'm aware of the horrible trigger pull. But, I've had a Ruger Compact myself and following some instructions that I picked up on the net, I honed the trigger sear and got it down to a nice crips 3 lbs. I'm not afraid to undertake such work as I'm a millwright and have spent a lifetime working on turbines and turbo-machinery. (not blowing my own horn or anything).

Hey Roger, I had to edit as I saw your reply after I submitted. No, there is no guncase. Yes, he's held a Ruger (mine) but didn't fire it. Private sale, no GST and it wasn't advertised here or on CGN, a friend of mine had it. He moved on to a Rem XCR in .300WSM so the '06 was a safe queen.

Sounds like it would be a logical choice for your brother then, it's nice that you can do the trigger up for him. Brass is everywhere, and dies are cheap, as is factory ammo, tough to beat the 06 for an all round hunting cartridge, some may say impossible .

my son's first big hunting rig was a Tikka Deerhunter in 30-06 and topped with a Bushnell 4200..
perfect calibre, killed a lot of game with it...as a gun nut, it's hard to explain the need for other calibers as the 30-06 pretty much does it all....(finally broke down and bought a 300WM and then a 270 a couple of years after...) now we got past that but it remains his favourite shooting gun.....

When my bro told me that he had picked an '06, I told him that I would never own "that" caliber. He was dumbfounded and asked me why? I replied that I wanted more than one gun in my safe.....

Can't be that good of a deal the bolt is on the wrong side, so by the time you pay to have it switched over you could have bought a new one

You can replace the spring, or carefully clip off a coil to reduce the trigger pull weight. Pat Stiles (deceased) did mine, and it turned out well. Good dependable rifle. Not a bad deal IMO.

I did the same thing with the 2 I used to own, could never get exceptional accuracy with them which is why I don't have them now.

Pay an extra $200 and get new setup 30-06 Winchester Featherlite with scope. WSS and SD have them.
