Exchange them at Walmart, usually the person working there doesn't look or care what year they are as long as they have the new style valve on them.

Not really a fair question/request ^ .
You're asking someone to risk losing their propane certificate, and possibly even their job. Not to mention risking the safety of the users ... you (and your family?).
Do the right thing ... trade those 10 year old tanks in for new ones.

ROFL...ok there, Neddy. So two weeks ago they were perfectly safe but today I'm going to level a city block with them?
It's ok..I found a place that filled them no problem. He kinda chuckled about it. Better call the bomb squad.

I wonder what would happen if your PAL was 2 weeks over due, or your insurance and registration? It's all good until you get checked.
What you got someone to do is illegal!! Hope your proud of yourself. You just saved $25.00

I actually saved myself about $150 (2 30 lb tanks) and quite proud.
Btw, you need to work on your analagies...they're moot. USING these tanks is not illegal, even if I got "checked" by the "propane authorities" UP AGAINST THE WALL, BUDDY...IS THAT AN OUTDATED PROPANE TANK I SEE YOU WITH? LOLOL!!!!
It's so funny watching you guys get yer panties in a bunch.

Using them is not illegal, Filling them is Illegal. The person who did it can loose their job, the company can be fined and or loose their license to sell propane. The date is on there for a reason. Just like the date is on a carton of milk. It can still be good after said date, but can go bad in one heck of a hurry after that date. Instead of being proud you saved some money you should be ashamed you asked someone to break the law.

funny, a 500 or a 1000 gallon tank doesnt require inspection certification or even a tire kick from the delivery truck driver.
guess there isnt enough money in it

Maybe you should drive a little north. You can get your tanks much cheaper..
Your right using the tanks isn't illegal. The guy that filled them broke the law. When he loses his job, I guess you will be just as proud, as you didn't lose anything. Absolutely pathetic.

That really doesn't matter does it.
The point is , this "gentleman" is asking someone to do something illegal. I know MANY teenagers who work at gas stations and idiots like the aforementioned fellow make them feel very uncomfortable when they drive up and want them to fill there overdue tanks, be it 2 weeks or 2 years, it's all the same. it is against the law and thay can lose their job over it.
Would YOU do something illegal that may cost you your livelihood????

If it makes you feel better I just drank Organic Milk from Safeway that was overdue on the 19th...It passed the smell test however I will let you know if it passes the stomach test in a few hours.
I need my cornflakes and banana before I go to bed.

Its not really about how much you saved, or whether or not its a big felony, its about ethics, and here u have proved you have none. Theres one thing you don't have sir, and that is ethics, however sir, there is one thing, that you do have sir, and that sir, is stupidity.

Picture of the tank blevy is from a fire outside the tank. Maybe from a grass fire ?
I had thought all "they" did to re-cert a tank was replace the (brass) valve, and/or re-stamp a new date in it.
Had one filled in BC one time and the guy that filled it (gas stn. owner) told me to just re-stamp the tank. Paint if needed.
I still have tanks 20+ years past their "due date". Although, I'm not refilling due to the new attachment styles.
Just using up the old propane to clean out pocket Goghers.

Dang should of bought new tanks instead of getting them expired ones refilled.
Lost Creek Fire 2003. My trailer was about 300 feet from this one but did not burn. Nor my quads.

While I don't agree with the solicitation of propane pimping and asking some pimple faced teenager with his pants hanging down past the crack of his ass to risk his potential career, I have seen some interesting things happen to propane tanks.
This one time... at band camp, no, wait, it was at a border guard station between Morocco and Mauritania... in a stone hut with no windows. They taped a syringe and needle to the valve, cracked the tank open a bit and used it as a lantern. Have you ever seen a propane refilling station in a third world country? Run...

This gets me thinking. We picked up a used (1989, I think) cargo van yesterday, that runs on propane. I don't think that tank needs to be certified, either.

So the person doing the filling had no responsibility in this situation. I don't imagine the OP held a gun to anyone's head?
I don't agree with him asking for it to be filled, many times I had someone ask me to fill a outdated propane tank, I would say no (yes i was a pimply faced high school kid). Done deal. IMO the store that filled it deserves as much "blame, jumping on, trashing" as much as the person who takes it in.
No one forces a company to fill outdated propane tanks.

It's more than just the date...
Asking someone to do something you know is illegal is just plain wrong regardless if they do it or not...you should be ashamed of yourself.
Just because they have a date stamp, there is no magic here...the tank a day before the expiry is just as (un)safe as a tank the day after expiry; why risk a problem just to milk out one more fill? I have had gas jockeys refuse to fill a rusty tank that was within date (as they should).
Getting a recert tank is easy and fairly cheap esp since you usually can trade in an old tank if it's in good shape. The recert process is a bit more than just a valve, they also pressure test the tank and do a visual inspection. Many propane shops carry a variety of sizes of recerts.
The money you saved ($150 for 2 tanks sounds high BTW) is nothing compared to the regrets if an old tank has a problem. Don't get me wrong, I have used out of date tanks but make sure I use them up quickly and then trade them in.
If you have a problem I don't think you can call it an accident...esp if you had a hand in making it happen.

enigma: something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained
unscrupulous adj. Devoid of scruples; oblivious to or contemptuous of what is right or honorable.
Pretty much explains it all.
