Looking for a scope
Hi! i just picked up my first high power and need a good scope. is there anything in a scope i should be looking for. I was thinking leupold mainly for the reason i am living in calgary and not far from Okatokes. Im a new shooter so is there scopes out there more tailored to help? any information would be very helpful. i would like a little knowledge before i impulse buy : ) thank you

A Leupold VXII 3x9x40 is a great all around scope. Leupold is also building scopes under the Redfield name in the same factories as the Leupold scopes are produced.

Put a Leupold on it. I started with Bushnell scopes on my hunting rifles and replaced them all with Leupold, it's a little pricey when you do it that way. Leupold glass is money well spent.

Scope...
I am too sure of the line of Minox scopes, but a friend of mine and I, both recently purchaced 2 pairs of binoculars from Cameraland in NY, and we are both very impressed with the optics and quality of glass. Lifetime warranty on both the binoculars and riflescopes, with the riflescopes using the high end german made "Schott" glass used in their HG line of binoculars. According to some reviews, Minox will be and are in direct competition with Zeiss! Cabelas Canada has them between $350-$630. I am definetely looking at upgrading my scope to one of these, maybe the 3-15x42 BDC. ($459) Something to maybe look at!

If you plan on hunting in all types of weather, then go with the Bushnell Elite...it has the rainguard coatings on the lenses. Course you can always buy those same options for another 80 bucks for the Leupolds and screw them on....as long as your scope is made after 2003(me thinks)

Best advice will come if you define the parameters of the intended use and price range.
Leupold makes decent hunting scopes, but for many specific uses there are much better options.

There are a few manufacturers that do make better quality glass and lens coatings, companies like Zeiss,Swarovski,Leica,Kahles,Schmidt&Bender,to name a few.Leupold do make good scopes, but I prefer a scope with a more constant eye relief.

Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the scope lens that produces the optimum sight picture.Try moving your head closer and farther from the scope, and you will see what I mean.As you change the magnification setting on a Leupold variable scope, the optimal eye relief can change significantly, where on other scopes,it may remain much more constant. That changing eye relief is the main reason that I usually choose to buy scopes other than Leupold.

I think a good rule of thumb is to spend as much or slightly more on the scope then you did for the firearm.
Personally I would stay away from Bushnell... Some love them, I consider them to be a waste of money. There are scopes cheaper then Bushnell that will perform the same.
Look through as many as you can... when you pick up the right one you will know it. I suggest a 3-9x scope with a 40mm objective for your first scope. If you have a bit more money to play with, bump up to the 50mm objective.
Stay away from "Tactical" type scopes, high magnifications & gimmicks like ballistic reticles. Using and understanding these things will come with time, knowledge and money.
I have been fairly impressed with the new Weaver scopes... both in price and product.

I just picked up a 3x9x 40mm Burris Fullfield II with the ballistic plex scope for my new Rem. XHR for $329 at Wholesale. It let in better light than the Bushnell 3200. Good bang for your buck!!

Don't ask, look for yourself. Many stores have a scope tool that basically looks like a rifle stock that holds a scope so you can check it out better. If the store has one,put the scopes in the tool, set the eye relief, and vary the magnification while watching the eye relief,to see if it changes significantly. If the store doesn't have such a tool, check their new and used guns to see if any have the scope mounted that you are considering.Lastly, bring your gun to the store and make sure that the scope you choose can be mounted so that the eye relief is correct with the mounts that you choose.

Since Criketts bought a Sako, unless your rings are for a Sako, they may very well be useless to him.Butler Creek flip ups can be bought for about $25 for both covers. As for better glass,I don't consider the Rifleman glass better than the Elite glass.

Grab it. I wouldn't trade my 3200s straight up for anything less then an vx 11.
