Default Gun politics?(AR rifles,handguns)

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone knows a good website or a place I can find information on gun politics in canada. I know there is a push for the de-restriction of AR style rifles in canada, as they are becoming more of a target/varmint/hunting rifle. I think it`s dumb that they are restricted, as I can buy a semi auto rifle in just about any caliber I want, but because the action is not an AR action, its non-restricted. There are many tactical rifles for sale that are non restricted, that shoot the same calibers(they are not an AR action so they are non-restricted) and are much more expensive than an AR rifle. I would love to own one, but to spend that much money to shoot paper at the range is hard to justify for me(however I will eventually own one). I would also like to see a wilderness carry permit easier to get for handguns(I spend a lot of time in the back country). The old shotty gets a little heavy after awhile carrying it to those hike in lakes. Would just like to find some info on what direction gun laws are heading, or maybe even get involved. Any help would be great, and all opinions welcome!

If you're not already a member, there are lots of politically active people over at www.Canadiangunnutz.com. It's really good resource for what you're looking for I think.

You are right that there is little difference between the AR action and many others out there now that are not restricted. Having said that remember that you could get your wish and they would make the AR action classification the same as the others. The only problem might be they would make them all the same classification by making them all restricted.
All I am saying is be careful for what you wish for and always keep in mind that when it comes to gun control logic and common sense rarely inter into things.
When you make a wave you can not always be sure just which shore it will wash up on.

I look at it the same way you all do but I'd worry about how you fought against the restriction on AR type rifles. Going around saying that this or that semi-auto is no worse or is about the same MIGHT just get the people that think they know better then everyone else ( although they've never lived in the country or held a rifle in they're life ) to say HEY your right lets ban all semi auto's like Austraila did.

I understand it could go one way or another. Like I said hope for the best. I am not some crazy activist or anything. I shot gophers with a buddy's ar in Montana, it was way fun!! Just wish we could do the same here in canada. They are a great rifle, wish they didn't have this bad reputation in canada. It sucks we have people making and pushing laws that don't understand firearms, and are probly too scared to hold a knife in their own hand to slice a piece of bread.

i would love to see a backcountry handgun permit easier to get as well. i would be in favor of that before the removal of restrictions on the ar haha...but that is just me...not that i think ar's should be restricted, i just want to be able to carry my handgun in the backcountry.

I fully agree. I think it would be easy to do. I would be happy calling the cfo saying I'm going camping these days and would like a permit to transport and carry while camping. They just need to more leniant. I would much rather carry my revolver on those long hikes!!

The AR, for most urban civilians is viewed as a military arm who's primary role is to kill people. They have no concept on how firearms work and have no interest in finding out. To them it is a symbol of death or war and is viewed as a threat which should be removed.

If you are a PM who has a minority gov't and are the leader of the Conservatives which are not popular in the Center of the Universe, or the Dysfunctional Socialists due east of them, would you risk trying to push something like your asking for through? How do you think that will effect the vote for him there, and would he be able to remain in power? If the Liberals get put back in power by the Center of the Universe, What will happen to the gun control issue?

Now it's just the elimination of the registry, and the Libs probably won't touch the gun control issue. However, if the AR is moved into an unrestricted class, the Lepine bs will be revisited and we will be back to where we are or even much worse. Better not ask for too much too fast.

You want politics, you want to be informed?
Try the Canadian Firearms Digest.
Be careful though.... these guys are very astute of the sick gun laws in this nation.
