The topic of barrel life, rifleing condition, etc ALWAYS pops up, whether on the range, at a shoot, or on the internet.
Bore scopes arre a great aid in guaging thhis, but they are very much like chronographs in thatt unless used properly and in context, they are actually no help, and may be a hinderance!
A wise man once told me NEVER to scope a barrel, "take the copper out"
only if the the groups opend up, and when that didn't help, just shoot it at game , never at targets ( if it was a hunting rifle).
The point was, that unless you really know what you are looking at, it's all voodoo iin there!
We stuck a borecope down somee barrels this weekend, and Bushrat was commenting on some of the stuff he's seen over the years.
pretty interesting , for sure!
rifleing leades not starting even, rough bores, worn out rifleing, etc.
Just how much is too much?
I suspect that most of us rebarrel long before we ever have to.
i have resisted rebarreling my son's Sportco match rifle now for two seasons.
it has a pretty high round count ( upwards os 6,000), and some of those rounds were in tremendous heat of the summer.
it still shoots well enough to win matches , however.
The 6mmBR barrel we scoped was a bit suspect by its past owner, but according to the scope was in good shape.
You could see in one we scoped that it had some rough spots in it .
This rifle had just finished putting 5 rounds darned near on top of one another off a rest with no rear bag!
My sons's 6.5X284 is a real baqrrel burner, but the barrel scope says although it has some firecracking, it will be good for quite some time yet.
I was going to buy a borescope, if nothing more than to stick it down a friend's barrel and say stuff like " Oh, My!" or " HOLY CRAP!" and watch the
ensuing frenzy!
Think I'll save my money and buy a woopee cushion instead - a WHOLE bunch cheaper and about the same laughs!
