Default Southern Alberta Brown Trout

Hello all,

I am from northern BC, but currently living in the Lethbridge area for school. I have heard many of the rivers around here (including the Oldman) have brown trout and I would love to catch one! I am an avid fly fisherman and they are not present where I am from so I'd love to cross it off my list while I'm down here.

I am looking for some advice on the best place I could potentially catch one on the fly. I have tried the Oldman near the dam and had no luck. I am not looking for secret holes or giant fish, I just simply want to catch one (could be a 10inch dink for all I care). I am no stranger to putting in the work to find fish myself so all I want is just a general area that's good this time of year. It also doesn't have to be the Oldman, I'd be more than willing to travel up to 2 hours from Lethbridge to find one if any of the other rivers in this area are more productive for browns.

Any tips on flies this time of year would be much appreciated as well! From my short research, it sounds like streamers can be productive this time of year? Even dries as well?

Thanks!

If legal to harvest, very tasty fish. Also non-native introduce (aka invasive but contributes to the fly fishing economy). James and Tay River are a good place to start if you got time off from lecture. Streamers and indicators always great from now until freeze up.

A couple of other places you could consider are the Bow River downstream of Calgary or Beauvais Lake if you have access to a boat or float tube.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I usually have a day or two during the week that I can get out there so I'll definitely try some of these spots before freeze up.

try lundbreck fall. Fast water though. From back parking lot, there's usually a brown hugging wall there's a small break near pillar hiding in a small break. On left side of big rock you stand on to cast there's some hiding ready to take out prey.
