Default Poor mans 300 Wby mag

I got out the old Pre -64 model 70 300 H&H that was rechambered to 300 wby by my dad many years ago. That rifle is stupid accurate with old Nosler 180 Solid base and IMR-7828 . Shot it and ran the awesome garmin chronograph for 3230 fps . It’s my sons go to elk rifle now as I struggle to shoot large calibers anymore .

There's a reason that's the best seller of the Wby lineup, I think it makes the most sense of any of their cartridges. My dad has one in a MkV as well and it's awesome

Have had lots of WB cartridges. Got to say the 300 and the 257 are my two all time favourites. The Winchester 70 is a pretty good chassis for that round.

It is kinda surprising how well it shoots as it has the original Weatherby 7/8 inch freebore and the bullets need to be seated relatively deep due to issue the action length. But boy does it shoot ! This gun would have been rechamber in the / early 60s

I bought a 257wby and a 300wby, both Fibermarks, for a great price when the local gunshop closed. I liked the ballistics of both, but was disappointed in the accuracy of both rifles. I sold the 300, and rebarreled the 257, and used the 257 for about 10 years , taking deer, pronghorn, and elk, before selling it.

I had a 300 Wby Mag Rem 700,that thing shot nice cloverleafs around half in. 3 shot groups with imr 7828 and 180 grs ,should have kept that one.

That's a cool gun. Do you know the story or history of the gun? Original owner, don't need his name , but why decided to rechamber etc. How accurate, how many elk stories, etc. Cool that your son seems to appreciate and is going to use it.

I also had a love affair with Weatherby for years. 257,300, and 338-378. They each had their place in my heart.

It was my Dads gun , he would have purchased it in the early 60s. At that time Weatherby calibers were way ahead of everything , especially as there were no chronographs to test their advertised velocities. However wby rifles were expensive so many guys purchased the Model 70 in 300 H&H and rechambered them “poor man’s 300 WBY “ . I think my dad probably shot 6 elk , I have shot numerous deer with it. I struggle now to shoot large calibers so my oldest son is using it now

With the old Nosler solid base it would clover leaf 3 rounds at 100 yds . Hopefully this week he connects with an elk
