Iginla will be gone before Calgary picks at 9. Only way they get him is if they trade up.
This rebuild is so long overdue. Short term pain for long term gain. I think they did as good as expected for Markstrom. Everyone hoped for more but reality kicks in and I think this is as good as they could do. Would have made a bid difference if they weren't having to deal with a No trade clause but it is what it is.
As always, time will tell.

Daily Face Off "graded" the trade and gave Calgary an A-.

Unfortunately the way the hockey world works now is long term pain for a short term gain meaning the envelope of opportunity to hoist a cup is very very short just the way the league is designed now.
The three cups in a row or three cups in five years are over I believe.
Just getting into the playoffs many years in a row is a huge bonus for any team.

That 'promising young goalie' got absolutely lit up every game I saw him in. Plus he's a midget.
Plus those Kadri and Huberdeau contracts aren't going anywhere.

He’s won at every level he’s played at despite his size. There’ll no doubt be growing pains at the NHL level but during a rebuild the pressure isn’t going to be solely on him.
As for Kadri and Huberdeau, they both showed leadership as the year went on mentoring the younger guys so it’s not a total loss.
The bar is pretty low! And glimpses of trending in right long term direction are good.

Hope we get another good D man or two. This power play is going to be pretty tough to defend against:
Kreider-Draisaitl-Panarin
Zibanejad-Fox

Round 2
No. 41; No. 62 (from DAL)
Round 3

Round 6

Nothing would make me happier than seeing them get Iginla. I know the Habs have been talking to him, but who the hell wants to play in Montreal lol.

He'd likely want to go somewhere where could outdo his old man cupwise tho and I doubt he'd want to play in Cow City til he's 57.
Hell, 43's a stretch just for a playoff sniff.
Gotta feel for Jarome. Just another player that can't be called great...no
cups.

Thats a half decent return for McDavid if you throw in Shesterkin and a first rounder.

Bread Man to the Capitals for a 2nd in 2025.
Figure that's not bad, all things considered.
Wonder what Craig is gonna do with all that cap space, 5th most in the league.

I love the off season when the GMs do most of their contract work.
Anyway, with that much cap space the Flames could pick up a bad contract from a team that has limited cap space.
Something like
Player X plus a first and 2nd round pick in exchange for a 4th rounder.
Teams that mismanage the salary cap pay dearly.

Man Connie is cooking.
I don't care what happens here on out, I am enjoying watching him work.
Has pulled off a few fleece jobs recently.
Now to Trade up for Tij.
He must sit down every morning and think, I should just think the exact opposite of Treliving and the last few gm's and I will be ok haha.

If Tij is there at 9 great, rumored price to move up isn't worth it. IMO if we move up it should be for Cayden Lindstrom.

Mangiapane traded to capitals
Definitely feels like a rebuild
Can we trade Kadri and Huberdeau?

Be interesting in a few years from now to see what type of team Craig Conroy can assemble to make the Flames competitive again. With the floundering value of the Canadian dollar, and a destination that will not be a popular choice for free agents. The draft selections he makes can either make the club a playoff bound team that can compete for the cup, or a cellar dweller which will always be out of contention. Until the Oilers start stumbling the pressure will always be on the Flames to produce a playoff caliber team.

The low Canadian dollar should make it even more appealing to sign north of the 49th, particularly for Canadian players or any player that wants to live up here. NHL salaries are all paid in US dollars. Be like making an extra 25% salary.

I'm curious too, will we follow the path of Buffalo, Arizona, Edmonton and be terrible for a decade or New York Rangers, Colorado, and Lightning. Hopefully he can draft like the Dallas Stars have lately.
